Description Chris Grove 2017-12-08 18:03:27 UTC
Description:
I upgraded to Libre Office 5.3.7.2 (because base kept 'Not Responding', though it was finding my data). Since upgrading, when I open a database and request a table, I get the message 'The connection to the data source (whichever I try) could not be established. The connection could not be created. May be the necessary data provider is not installed'

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open database
2.select Tables
3.select any table

Actual Results:
See summary. No further steps possible

Expected Results:
Displayed the contents of that table

Reproducible: Always

Hi Chris

Did you upgrade the previous version from 32 to 64 bits? If yes, the java environment must match.
Comment 2 Chris Grove 2017-12-09 12:59:42 UTC
I think I did upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit. Certainly I told Libre Office to load an X86-64 version. I have upgraded to Java 8 version 151 which says it is a 64 bit version but the problem persists. Java says that Firefox will not run the Java plug-in, so what do I do now?

Open LibreOffice, next Options > LibreOffice > Advanced
Wait some seconds until the installed JRE appearing and tick it if needed.
If nothing happens, clik Add to indicate where to find the JRE.
This should be enough to use Base as expected.
Does it Work?
Comment 4 Chris Grove 2017-12-11 15:41:01 UTC
I may be being very stupid, but when I go into Java Control Panel it tells me I have a JRE installed, but when I carry out your instructions, Libre office tells me I have none, and the location of the JRE Java tells me of does not appear. You mention a hidden attribute but I don't know how to access a hidden file to change its attributes!

Java Options

I join a screenshot showing how the Java Options appear to me.
Notice the location of the first version is reported under the window.
This is the 64 bits JRE version, the other is the 32 bits version. A radio button is to tick to choose the right version to use.

Does this help?

You are very patient and I am still, probably, being very stupid, but I have yet to succeed to get any JREs to appear on that screen. Java Control Panel tells me that I have a JRE at c:\\program files (x86)\java, but when I get to the screen you gave, and try to add that JRE, I am told that the file does not contain a JRE and would I please try another address.

If I search for javaw.exe I am told it exists in c:\\programdata\java, which (programdata) does not appear on any list of the files in c:\ that I can find.

You have to open the next folder when you use Add, until to get the jre one:
C:\Program Files(x86)\Java\jre1.8.0... This last one is oportant.

I have gone on to the next folder c:\\program files (x86)\java\jre1.8.0.151. (I had done that before) and on the the two folders within it - bin and lib, but with each of them I get the same message 'The folder you have selected does not contain a valid JRE. Please select another folder'

Maybe I should reinstall java but when I try, I am told java is up to date and does not offer me the possibility to reinstall it!

Java says that the 64bit version of Firefox is not compatible with the Java 64 bit plug-in. Could this be the problem? Any solution?
Comment 10 Chris Grove 2017-12-29 16:10:05 UTC
I am told that this bug report is seen as a problem in getting LO to recognise my java. This problem has been resolved. I shall file another report in due course.

(In reply to Chris Grove from comment #10)

@Chris : a suggestion, that worked for me :

- download and install Oracle SE JDK 9.0.1 for Windows 64bit
- download and install Oracle SE JRE 9.0.1 for Windows 64bit

Restart LO and see if the Java environment is recognized.
Comment 12 Chris Grove 2018-01-08 15:45:06 UTC
Thanks Alex, but after a good deal of effort, I have got LO to recognise the Java JRE. It would appear that the problem lies with 64 bit LO no longer recognising old Access database (.mdb). I have opened another bug report, but no solution has yet ben proposed.
