Please, provide numbers showing that "courriel" is better understood than "e-mail" by people from French speaking community. AFAIK, "courriel" is a French-canadian (québécois) creation when the French Academy prescribed "mèl".

You’re asking for something impossible. How can you quantify understanding?

AFAIK, “courriel” is the preferred term across Francophone translation communities (at least, it’s used in KDE and Ubuntu French l10n teams, the ones I’m familiar with).
Also, it’s got the Académie française’s seal of approval in 2003. http://www.academie-francaise.fr/questions-de-langue#26_strong-em-courriel-ml-em-strong

It’s actually “mél.”, but that’s an abbreviation not intended to be used as a noun to translate “email”. It was created by analogy with “tel.” for “téléphone”.

@Sophie, any opinion here?

Courriel is a Canadian name (from OQLF). In French from France, last Larousse edition recommends 'courriel' but 'e-mail' is accepted at the same level. Out of France (Francophonie), 'e-mail' is used and accepted, so my decision (in the last translation round) was to keep 'e-mail' as it is the most common known word for French speaking people in other countries than France and Canada.

Mél. is an abbreviation and not a word (just like Tél.) so it should never be used as a word (see Academie's abstract: En revanche, on ne peut substituer mél. à courriel puisque mél. n’est pas un mot plein, mais l’abréviation de messagerie électronique. Il doit s’utiliser uniquement devant une adresse électronique, de même qu’on utilise tél. uniquement devant un numéro de téléphone. Mél. : untel@voila.fr)

I'll keep 'e-mail' until I'm sure it is no more the known word for users not living in France, as those living in France understand both 'e-mail' and 'courriel' - Sophie
