Description sven 2018-05-16 07:41:07 UTC
The recently added feature for embedding video data into the PDF file is nice, but there seems no way to disable it.

Usually, I embed my movie files into my presentation and create a PDF file of my presentation for two reasons:
1) to have a backup in case LibreOffice isn't working properly on another PC.
2) to create a small file for my students to download. So I would like to create one PDF with embedded movies and one without embedded movies.

A simple checkbox within the PDF export options to enable or disable the embedding video functionality would be solving the problem.

Dear lord, YES! What genius thought that embedding videos into PDF's would be a good idea? I just exported an ODP presentation to PDF and didn't realise - until I started to upload the file to our e-learning server - that the file size had increased from 576 KB to over 103 MB!

For the love of all this is good and holy, either add an option to disable export of videos, or remove the export feature altogether.

And no - this isn't an enhancement request; it's a major bug that needs fixing. Badly. Would somebody please change this from "enhancement" to "major", because that's what it is.

For me there is no bug here and no need for an enhancement because all you ask for is already there:
- if you do not want to embed video in the pdf, then insert the video as link
- if you want to embed the video in the pdf, then insert the video as embedded material.

Support for linked and embedded videos in the PDF export of Writer and Impress has been added in LibreOffice 5.4, see the release notes here: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/5.4#Improvements_in_the_PDF_filter

For more details about this functionality see the blogpost https://vmiklos.hu/blog/pdf-video-export.html

Closing as Resolved WontFix. Feel free to reopen if you disagree. In that case please explain what could be expected in case of you want export in PDF a presentation embedding a video without the video: what to do with the video? remove, link (where?), only a preview, other?

Best regards. JBF
