Description Jim Davis 2018-05-31 03:36:05 UTC
Description:
1. Pivot tables only sort on first row or column after created.
2. Setting sort criteria in Layout dialog (before table creation) appears inoperative.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Create a pivot table with more than 1 row and more than 1 column
2.assign sort orders in Layout mode or generate pivot table and ..
3.Try to sort by any row or column other than the first

Actual Results:
Only able to sort the first row and/or column

Expected Results:
Data columns & rows should sort by multiple rows and/or columns or at a minimum, sort by other rows and/or columns than only the first.

Reproducible: Always

Sample modified to show how to sort works.

Works for me.

But I think something is missing here.
If you want to sort by the third column, move it to be the first column.
Otherwise the sort in menu field, sort the field without change the order of previous columns only sort if the field has several values for the field of column before.

On your sample file modified, change the sort order of the second column, and you can see how it works.

pivot table as desired-with broken col/row two sort
Comment 4 Jim Davis 2018-06-01 02:22:37 UTC
If the only sort available after the table is created is to the first column or row then you should only show the sort option in the dropdown for the first row or column.

Additionally, you should remove the sort options from the data field options in the pivot table layout dialog since it is "expected" that sorts are only possible on the first row and/or column.

These two corrections would keep people from wasting time experimenting with presented options that are not intended to be functional.

It "worksforme" with YOU because you have rearranged the columns. The sample I attached is in fact not the desired layout, but rather a workaround because sorts are only possible on the first columns and/or rows.

The desired table result is as shown in the additional attachment BUT SORTED BY COLUMN TWO AND ROW TWO. The "Matrix to 3C" sheet is the copy, paste, sort, and reformat that is required because of the sort limitation, so I'm well aware of the problem and unfortunate workaround that you say "worksforme".

Anything less requires a "workaround" and unnecessary time spent.

I sense that you won't acknowledge it as a "bug" so I'll change this report to "VERIFIED", "WONTFIX".

Not true. Drag the fields for their title to get the desire order.

Not true. It is for select the field's order not to sort the whole pt.

Or you don't want to understand/accept how it works, because it's not what you like.

Yes their is no other way than to rearrange columns, and sort every field.

Sorting in the order col2-col3-col1, whit columns in pt positioned as col1,col2,col3, at least looks a few awkward.
