"User Profile Reset:" means you should have tried with that.
Please reset profile: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile
With such a general problem, it must be something local.

Can I revert back to a previous version? I'm unsure what sort of "improvement" was done with the last update but everything worked fine with the earlier version and I'd prefer to revert to an earlier version than risk losing the words added to the spellchecker to take advantage of the "improvement". Or would I be better off to go back to using Open Office?

Yes, you could uninstall your current version and download LibreOffice 5.4.7 from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/.

However, to be certain the reported issue is not
related to corruption in the user profile, could you please reset your
Libreoffice profile ( https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile ) and
re-test?

It sounds like I either have to risk loosing all the words added to the spell check dictionary to revert to an earlier version that didn't have the delay or go back to Open Office - is that correct? Or is there some other way I can get Lebre Office to work and not have to wait so long?

Hello,
You can also try in safe mode without loosing all the words.
Just go to Help - Restart in safe mode -> Continue in safe mode.
Is it laggy in safe mode?
