Libreoffice doesn't show Burmese text correctly when I type

Libreoffice doesn't show Burmese font correctly on my Mac pro with High Sierra. I use Keyman Burmese keyboard, Libreoffice 6.0.6.2 and Paduak book. Please see my screen shot.
Comment 1 Xisco Faulí 2018-08-21 23:19:48 UTC
Could you please share a screenshot how it should look if the text were displayed correctly ?
Comment 2 Alex Thurgood 2018-08-22 07:28:51 UTC
@L : does the Padauk font you are using come supplied with MacOS or have you installed it separately ? If separately, where did you download this font ?

For example, I see that SIL offers the Padauk font for download under the Open Font License for MacOS, Linux and Windows, but it clearly states that it relies on Graphite and OpenType, and application-specific support in order to support complete rendering in all of the myanmar scripts :

https://software.sil.org/padauk/

Under the paragraph "Common Questions":
"The other key to successful rendering of complex fonts is the support given by the application you are using."
Comment 3 Alex Thurgood 2018-08-22 07:42:35 UTC
@L : I wouldn't be surprised if there are rendering issues with a complex script font such as Padauk, however, it would be useful, as Xisco had indicated in his comment, a comparative sample document or screenshot of what the font should look like when correctly rendered.

The RTF document opened in TextEdit indicates that the font name is Myanmar Sangam MN.

If I open the same RTF document in LO master, I just see lines of rectangles instead of the characters.

If I copy/paste the text from the RTF file opened in TextEdit into a clean Writer document, I just see lines of rectangles instead of the characters.

I clearly don't have the font required installed on my system.

This font is owned and trademarked by Murasu Systems Sdn Bhd Malaysia.

It is a TTF font (although what kind precisely, I do not know), and I have been unable to determine whether the font is available under an open source licence. It appears to be free, but even then, I see from here a warning:

https://www.free-fonts.com/myanmar-sangam-mn

"Free fonts often have not all characters and signs, and have no kerning pairs (Avenue ↔ A venue, Tea ↔ T ea)."

In other words, the problem appears to be inherent in the font you are using and not LibreOffice.

If you can show us an identical problem with an OTF (OpenType) font that is available under an open source licence, then perhaps we might be able to confirm this.

Unfortunately, all I can offer as advice at the moment is that you request that the font provider of the font you are using support the OTF specification, and that they release the font under an open source licence.

OKay, some more digging shows that this font is an OSX system font :

Myanmar Sangam MN; 13.0d1e2; 2017-06-29

LibreOffice should support the OS system fonts.

So, I tested on Master 6.2 alpha:

1) Set keyboard to myanmar (in case it made any difference, which it didn't)
2) Started LibreOffice Writer
3) Set the font to Myanmar Sangam MN
4) Tried typing a series of characters
5) Noticed how the display just showed a series of rectangles instead of the myanmar sangam font.

Confirming

L: Try upgrading to the latest version of LO and at least Mojave if you still have issues :)
