Description luca.manganelli 2018-08-23 08:30:53 UTC
Description:
Hello, I'm not trolling, but I want to understand if there is any way to make better startup performance.

Generally, launching OpenOffice Writer 3.4.1 is much, much, much faster than LibreOffice Writer 6.0.6:

Intel Dual Core 6600 with Hard Disk

  - LO 6.0.6 Writer, cold boot (start menu icon) to cursor: 23 seconds
  - OO 3.4.1 Writer, cold boot (start menu icon) to cursor: 6 seconds

  - LO 6.0.6 Writer, hot boot: 8 seconds
  - OO 3.4.1 Writer, hot boot: 3 seconds

On LibreOffice I tried to disable OpenGL/CL, JRE but it doesn't affect this issue.

Actual Results:
Slow boot

Expected Results:
A faster boot would be nice :-)

Reproducible: Always

Maybe you could experiment with UIforETW: https://randomascii.wordpress.com/2015/09/01/xperf-basics-recording-a-trace-the-ultimate-easy-way/
Note to have the latest Win 10.

I also hope that you tested those times with a clean profile (with LO 6.0 you can use Safe mode to do it).

Yes, I cleared the profile.

When I'm using the UIforETW (under Windows 7, but it seems to be working), there's a funny strange thing:

 - When I don't use UIforETW, launching LO writer takes 23 seconds;
 - When I use UIforETW and I am recording the launch of LO Writer, it takes 6 seconds!!!!!!!

How is it possible?

With Process Monitor, I see that LibreOffice is trying to access this website:

   http://vip1.ue-anycast1.cachefly.net/

what is it?

Do you run Comodo security software?
Comment 6 luca.manganelli 2018-10-29 07:54:54 UTC
No. We are running McAfee.
Comment 7 Buovjaga 2018-10-29 08:32:42 UTC
Anyway, CacheFly is a content delivery network: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CacheFly
Comment 8 luca.manganelli 2018-10-29 09:16:59 UTC
Yes, but I wonder why LibreOffice is seeing for it.

You did not mention what was the context. Is LibreOffice accessing it when you are in Start center with no documents open?
It is still a possibility that McAfee is somehow interfering and communicating with the CDN. Antiviruses these days do weird things.

Hello Luca,
Would you mind repeating the measures with McAfee disabled ?

Since we now use quickstart, this bug doesn't appear anymore.
