Sorry, I gather there's a misunderstanding caused by my use of English: the screenshot I uploaded is, actually, displaying, it's the text in dialogues etc. that isn't. Just click the screenshot attached to see what I mean. Best, Gerhard
Comment 4 Alex Thurgood 2018-09-24 16:34:13 UTC
@Gerhard : which system font are you using ? The image you have attached is typical of a font fallback issue where the font you want LO to display is incompletely or incorrectly supported (for whatever reason - bug, font type, font family, font weight, etc).
Comment 5 Alex Thurgood 2018-09-24 17:00:26 UTC
I can't repro this with my own version:

Version: 6.1.1.2
Build ID: 5d19a1bfa650b796764388cd8b33a5af1f5baa1b
Threads CPU : 4; OS : Mac OS X 10.13.6; UI Render : par défaut;
Locale : fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8); Calc: group threaded
Comment 6 Gerhard 2018-09-24 18:16:18 UTC
System font: I'm using the High Sierra default which is San Francisco. Thanks for looking into this!
Comment 7 Alex Thurgood 2018-09-27 11:46:22 UTC
@Gerhard : if you re-start LibreOffice in Safe Mode, do you still see the same problem ?
Comment 8 Gerhard 2018-09-27 12:28:09 UTC
Unfortunately, all those things a non-expert user can do - restart in safe mode, re-install LO - have not resolved the issue, I've tried.
Comment 9 Alex Thurgood 2018-09-28 14:26:07 UTC
@Gerhard : try turning off OpenGL support and restarting LO
Comment 10 Gerhard 2018-09-29 18:23:55 UTC
Hello Alex, I had tried that before, but tried it again now - it didn't make any difference. Thanks! Gerhard
Comment 11 Alex Thurgood 2018-10-01 07:02:17 UTC
#Gerhard : could you provide us with a screenshot of the LibreOffice "About" dialog ?

Or alternatively, copy/paste the text output of that dialog here ?

Thanks for investigating!
Comment 13 Alex Thurgood 2018-10-11 06:52:15 UTC
@Gerhard : you're using MacOS Mojave ?
Comment 14 Alex Thurgood 2018-10-11 06:59:43 UTC
So, who knows what Apple have got up to with font rendering on MacOS14 (Mojave), see for example this :

https://discuss.atom.io/t/macos-mojave-font-rendering-change/59058

no idea whether such tricks might affect LO's rendering, if at all, but it wouldn't be surprising.

Until I upgrade to Mojave, which won't be for a while, no way of testing.
Comment 15 gerhard.bissels@ub.unibe.ch 2018-10-11 07:27:42 UTC
Sorry, I should have confirmed that the problem occurs both in Mojave and High Sierra.

Thanks. I've just made the switch to Mojave, but unfortunately still don't have a problem in my own setup.
Comment 17 Alex Thurgood 2018-10-12 07:09:09 UTC
@Gerhard : do you have any font substitution defined under LibreOffice > Preferences > Fonts ?

I am using the High Sierra as well. I have the same problem.

Sorry, I don't have problems with English, but Chinese. I cannot bold the word.

Hello Alex and community, I take it there hasn't been any progress to resolve the non-displaying text in dialogue boxes? It's a bit inconvenient; but I'm also using LO in teaching, and the dialogue boxes with squares instead of text do puzzle my students. They aren't really good advertising for LO...
Best, Gerhard

Hi Gerhard,

Well, I can't reproduce this on :

Version: 6.3.0.0.alpha0+
Build ID: 810e5008e75e54241e056de2129886689d7c21eb
CPU threads: 4; OS: Mac OS X 10.14.2; UI render: default; VCL: osx;
Locale: fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-US
Calc: threaded

Macmini core i5 (end 2014) with Intel Iris 1536 Mo

Nor on MacbookPro 15" (end 2013) core i7 NVIDIA Geforce GT 750M / Intel Iris Pro

using LO6142

so we're a bit stuck, I'm afraid.

@Gerhard :

- which, if any, LO langpacks do you have installed ?
- what is the OS system language / keyboard set to ?

Hi Alex
I have the British English language pack installed.

Just noticed - it's not just the preferences dialogue boxes, but also the active tabs in spreadsheets - screenshot attached.

adding comment from https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice-bugs/2019-March/176600.html (outage):

"The problem of bold text in all dialogue windows not displaying, and being
replaced with squares, persists in 6.2.2. I just deleted LO and my user profile
and re-installed it, but to no avail. Is there still no solution in the
pipeline?"
Comment 29 Gerhard 2019-03-30 12:57:33 UTC
I'm getting rather frustrated with this bug. All bold text in dialogue boxes is not displaying which renders the whole package useless - and it's been half a year since I reported the bug. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, or changing options, but to no avail. If the developer community can't fix a dysfunctional UI within half a year, what hope is there for the whole package? I don't like going back to MS Office, but actually, I've got work to do, and need an office package...

Problem solved, following the instructions at https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/131310/libreoffice-54-font-gui-problem-just-rectangles-macos/.
