Description TeaBee 2018-11-22 11:47:46 UTC
Hi,

On my Mac OSX LibreOffice starts more slower than on any of my other machinces. Some details: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)), MacOS High Sierra Ver: 10.13.6 (17G3025), Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, LibreOffice Version: 6.0.6.2

I have a fast 2TB SSD and 8GB RAM and opening an ods file on the mac takes minimum 20 seconds. Opening the same ods on my Windows PC (120GB SSD, 16GB RAM) takes 3-4 sec. The interesting part is that opening the same ods in virtual Ubuntu Linux or Windows 10 (under Parellels on the same Mac) takes also 3-4 sec! It is nonsense that opening an ods faster on a VM than on the host OS, so it prooves for me that something is wrong with the Libreoffice on (my) mac, but despite of digging the internet for any solution I have not found anything.

I tried to reinstall, I cleard my profile, tryed lot of settings without success. Asking the same question on ask.libreoffice.org has not answered.

So many thanks in advance if you have any idea, and all of your efford.

Regards, -Tibor-

Does it work if you disable OpenGl ? -> https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/OpenGL

I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to
'UNCONFIRMED' if the issue is still present
Comment 2 TeaBee 2018-11-22 13:39:18 UTC
Hi, OpenGL is disabled. Enableing or disableing doesn't change the situation.
Thx -Tibor-

@TeaBee: without the ODS file in question, or a similar but anonymized file, against which we can test, we have now way of confirming this.

Performance, generally, of current versions (both Fresh and Stable) of LO on older Macs is poor.

In my own experience, performance of spreadsheet files on MacOS has suffered greatly since the introduction of parallel processing code (or rather, the possibility for processing to be executed in parallel using the OpenCL libraries.

In general, performance issues on MacOS are not addressed promptly. They take time to be nailed down, if at all (in some cases).

Among some of the recurrent perfomance issues with LO on MacOS:

- startup times ;
- loading times for documents (Writer/Calc/Draw) of more than a few kb ;
- documents containing multiple drawing objects (Impress/Draw/Writer);
- font management ;
- first opening of Finder to load or save a document from within a running LO ;
- probably a few more that I forget.

Basically, we need more info, in order to triage this bug report correctly.

Test file for LO performance test in OSX

Hi Alex,

Thanks for all information regarding to perfomance issues with LO on MacOS. I can confirm mostly all.

I attached the problematic ods to test.

Many thanks,
-T-

With
Version: 6.1.2.1
Build ID: 65905a128db06ba48db947242809d14d3f9a93fe
Threads CPU : 8; OS : Mac OS X 10.14; UI Render : par défaut;
Locale : fr-FR (fr_FR.UTF-8); Calc: group threaded

on a MacbookPro (2015) with 16Gb RAM and Intel Core i7 2.6Ghz

your file opens in 8.14s

With version

Version: 6.3.0.0.alpha0+
Build ID: 284dd58e326e61a5d84bde367e1e4873dd738c76
CPU threads: 4; OS: Mac OS X 10.14.1; UI render: default; VCL: osx;

Calc: threaded

on a Macmini (2014) 2,6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 Go 1600 MHz DDR3

 the same file opens in 26s
Comment 7 Alex Thurgood 2018-11-28 16:52:12 UTC
It would seem that LO is a resource pig and underperforms with RAM < 16Gb
Comment 8 Alex Thurgood 2018-11-28 16:55:04 UTC
(In reply to Alex Thurgood from comment #7)
> It would seem that LO is a resource pig and underperforms with RAM < 16Gb

Using LO6121 on Macmini described above produces similar results to 6.3alpha : 25s
Comment 9 Alex Thurgood 2018-11-28 16:55:48 UTC
I would agree that you shouldn't need 16Gb RAM just to load a Calc sheet...
Comment 10 TeaBee 2018-11-28 18:05:58 UTC
Yeah, it shouldn't, especially considering that LO in virtual Linux with 2GB RAM opens the same odf amasingly fast (for me) in 3-4 sec !
Thx, -T-
Comment 11 Alex Thurgood 2018-11-29 17:43:37 UTC
Compared opening test file on LinuxMint 19 VM - approximately 4s to start LO, load and display file.

Confirming.
Comment 12 Alex Thurgood 2018-11-29 17:46:10 UTC
Note that the VM I set up on my MBPro was configured to use fewer system ressources (less RAM, less screen memory), so this is even more of a kick in the teeth.
