I just wanted to provide a screen capture, but my Ubuntu upgraded to 18.10, and with it libre office to Version: 6.1.3.2 Now, at masters view, I can not set any background color (only an image). That is one way to solve it ;-)

And if you use any image, then in Normal mode all new slide have that image as background Status->NOTABUG
