Description David Lea 2019-03-09 18:35:53 UTC
Wanted to add graphics to a three page letter at the end. All needed to be resized and arranged in three wide columns - perfect alignment not needed.

The graphics were "squirrely" to start with, not wanting to stay where I put them.

When I got about a dozen on the last two pages, I tried to add captions and change the order and adjust the lineup and they became absolutely obstinate. They would not go where I put them, but would snap back to a previous position. Adding captions started shoving the lower graphics down the page and off to the next one. Then they wouldn't let me drag them back across the page break! It was a mess!!

I have worked with Lotus Wordpro and Print Shop and Print Master for many years and those programs always had the attitude that if the human put something there, that is what mattered and there was a solid feel to the operation. Chasing these ornery pictures around the page was a new experience for me and I don't like it!!

I had Microsoft Word on and off and never liked to use it for similar behavior!

Also, have to pay attention to the anchoring of the graphic--to page, to paragraph, to character. It makes a big difference.

By LO you must mean Libre Office, that would be Version: 6.0.5.2 (x64) so I guess I need to update it - I thought I had that on automatic. What do you mean by env?

That's what I mean - it shouldn't! The graphics should follow the cursor, not some invisible anchor point and paragraph! Isn't there a better way to do this?

We have a whole page of pictures - no text.

I just tried to download the 6.1.5 version and it wouldn't even start a download. I am using Firefox as my go-to browser. The dialog says:

"C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\CKHyAWsB.msi.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.

Try again later, or contact the server administrator."

This is a personal laptop computer - there is nobody here but me, so I guess I am the administrator and I say "download away!"

David: please only respond on bugtracker by using this link https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=123966#

LO is indeed a shortcut for "LibreOffice"
About env, I wanted to know if you use Windows, MacOs or Linux.
But since you indicate C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\CKHyAWsB.msi.part, I know now you use Windows.

About downloading, do you use official website (https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/)?
because C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\CKHyAWsB.msi.part means it began to download but it's not finished yet.

David, I read the bug report and the comments. I'm not sure, if you think there is a bug or you want to suggest an improvement or you just need help. In the latter case you should use https://ask.libreoffice.org.

In allother cases please attach a sample document, as this makes it easier for us to follow your steps.
I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' once the requested document is provided.

Pretty much a RTFM issue regards handling anchoring within Writer documents. No possibility for a rational request for improvements when rudiments of the anchoring mechanism is not understood.

This is current LibreOffice help entry:

https://help.libreoffice.org/6.3/en-US/text/swriter/guide/anchor_object.html?DbPAR=WRITER#bm_id3147828

And here the menu locations have changed a little, but this OpenOffice 'tutorial' is still applicable:

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=86682

Beyond that, this is a Usage issue => NAB

Also well covered in the current Writer guide [1] chapter on 'Images and Graphics' section "Positioning images within the text", pg 238.
