I'm using a file explorer which uses the DBUS tumbler service. This service allows any plugin to create a thumbnail image for a specific file format. Next the tumbler service provide this thumbnail to any application which require it (any file explorer, ...). The advantages of the tumber service is : it already manages an image cache and DBUS integration. It is used by XFCE and rely on a Gnome specification. A lightweight implementation could extract the thumbnail which already exists into the ODF file.
it seems the scope of this feature would be really limited. Jérôme, do you plan to implement it? Otherwise, I would suggest to close this as RESOLVED WONTFIX...
I installed the tumbler-plugins-extra Debian package which already provides a plugin for the ODF file format. Maybe it would help to have a XFCE desktop integration package which would have a dependency to this external package. Next this package could receive other XFCE specific integration stuffs.

The libreoffice.org download page already provides rpm or deb packages. It could provide a virtual package to which pulls the tumbler-plugins-extra package (for debian). I have no time to implement it currently.

XFCE desktop should do the same for their project. Not a LibreOffice issue. Please, report this issue to the XFCE project
I mean your debian packages repository could provide integration package for all desktop environment which are parts of Debian : xfce, lxqt, lxde, plasma, gnome, mate, etc. I highlighted a possible integration package for xfce.
