Description thecaspers 2019-09-28 18:10:03 UTC
Description:
LibreOffice has an online update feature that can be accessed through the application menu: Help - Check for Updates. The updater also checks for updates to extensions, although this is not documented. (See https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113015 for details.)

Automatic updates are normally configured through Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Online Update. For a standard installation, turning on automatic updates also allows LibreOffice to automatically check for updates to extensions.

However, in a Flatpak installation of LibreOffice, the online update and automatic update features are absent from the application. Although extensions can still be manually updated through the Extension Manager, LibreOffice lacks a way to automatically check for updates to extensions in a Flatpak installation.

It would be great if Flatpak installations of LibreOffice could also automatically check for updates to extensions.

(This issue might also apply to Snap installations, although I have not personally confirmed this.)

Steps to Reproduce:
Install LibreOffice through Flatpak.

Actual Results:
Unlike standard installations of LibreOffice, there is no way to automatically check for updates to extensions in the Flatpak installation.

Expected Results:
There should be a way to automatically check for updates to extensions in the Flatpak installation. Ideally, this would be implemented in "Help - Check for Updates" and "Tools - Options - LibreOffice - Online Update".

Reproducible: Always

Seems => NAB

Why would this be an issue against LO? Flatpak and Snap distributions (likewise the PortableApp & AppImage builds) are independent efforts.

Like any linux distros -- up to the package maintainers or their distribution framework to notify users of updates. Don't think it belongs in core beyond the stub there now (which as you note can be suppressed).

I thought LibreOffice itself was responsible for managing and checking for updates to LibreOffice extensions. Please correct me if this is supposed to be handled by the Linux distribution's package manager. As far as I'm aware, the Flatpak version of LibreOffice can only install extensions through the application interface.

Currently, LibreOffice's ability to automatically check for updates to itself is tied to its ability to automatically check for updates to its extensions. I'm asking for these two update checking mechanisms to be unbundled, so that Linux users (including Flatpak users) can take advantage of notifications for extension updates.

I agree with V Stuart here.
