Description mvarney82 2020-01-04 20:24:59 UTC
Description:
In both new and existing Writer documents, I am getting horizontal glitches that go all the way across the page. Usually it appears one or more pixel lines are missing from the text. Occasionally there will be a one-pixel line of gibberish by itself. It is usually necessary to scroll past the glitch, or reformat the line, to get it to return to normal. I don't recall seeing this in previous versions (I recently upgraded from perhaps 6.2.3). It's not easy to reproduce, but does happen pretty frequently (several times in half hour of editing).

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Scroll and edit randomly.
2.Seems to occur more often with shorter fonts such as Times New Roman 12 and with mixed line spacing, but this might be random chance.

Actual Results:
Glitch eventually appears.

Expected Results:
No glitch.

Reproducible: Sometimes

User Profile Reset: Yes

Screenshot of Glitch

This shot seems to show the line being stretched with artifacts. The issue also often manifests as shortening, i.e., part of a line missing.

@mvarney : Does the doucment have to be of a certain length ? I don't see it in a one and a half page sample document for example. Ideally, we would need a test document that shows the behaviour in order to try and reproduce.

Is OpenGL activated in the LO Preferences ?

Test Document

Issue occurred twice within a few minutes of testing here.
Comment 5 mvarney82 2020-01-15 06:33:14 UTC
OpenGL is disabled.
The issue seems to occur in documents of various lengths, as short as two pages. Unfortunately, it's happening pretty infrequently right now. I got it to happen twice within several minutes in a test document that I have attached here.
I decided to report it because it happened quite frequently in one document, which I unfortunately can't post here.
Comment 6 Dieter 2020-01-15 13:46:55 UTC
Can you give it a try with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ? I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the latest version. Change to RESOLVED WORKSFORME, if the problem went away.

Issue is still occurring on LO 6.3.4.2. See new screenshot.

OpenGL is turned off.

This is a 2015 MacBook Pro 12,1 on the normal Retina resolution.

Issue occurred several times within a few minutes. It occurred most frequently within the page break bar (white line appearing where it shouldn't) but also at least three times within the text. Document is single-spaced Times New Roman, 3+ pages long. Issue seems to be happening at least as frequently as in 6.2.8. Also, scrolling is more flickery/jumpy than in 6.2.8; it's much less smooth.

Still no repro for me I'm afraid, even with the supplied test document.

I've tried simple scrolling with arrow keys, scrolling just with the mouse, and a combination of the two, but still don't get a glitch like in the screenshot.

My hardware and output are different : macMini 2014 and output to external monitor at 1080p.
Comment 10 mvarney82 2020-01-24 21:53:48 UTC
Based on Alex's last comment, I wonder if this issue is specific to Retina/High-DPI scaling.
On the other hand, its frequency of incidence does vary a lot here, but it's usually not hard to reproduce within a couple minutes of scrolling.

I can't reproduce this both in stable and master. I'm using MacBook Pro 15-inch 2017 with standard resolution/retina

Issue is still present here, but has always been intermittent. Perhaps the version of macOS is also a factor. It's minor in any case, but certainly annoying when it happens.
Comment 13 eisa01 2020-05-03 09:58:50 UTC
Can't say I can reproduce this either, but I'm not using Writer besides bug testing

The others tested on Catalina, I'm on Mojave. Any reason you're still on High Sierra?
It's still getting security updates until this fall AFAICT, but if that is involved it could be hard to confirm this bug.

Comment 14 mvarney82 2020-05-03 18:39:42 UTC
I am on High Sierra because one of my other apps doesn't work in Mojave or later. I will be upgrading to Mojave in the fall.

If this issue really isn't happening in later versions of macOS, then it suggests something about High Sierra may be responsible. However, this type of issue doesn't appear to be happening in any of my other apps, so it may still be a LibreOffice bug that only occurs with certain graphics drivers or other software.

Could you please try to reproduce it with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ?
I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the latest version.
