Description Dave 2020-05-06 13:09:00 UTC
Description:
Accessing Help > Check for updates in Writer will report that software is up to date when it is actually not. I currently have 6.3.5.2 installed (from the stable 6.3 branch.) Help > Check For Updates says I'm up to date. Help > About says I'm on 6.3.5.2. The latest version at this time in the 6.3 branch is 6.3.6. Obviously, I'm not up to date as reported.

This seems to happen whenever there are four digits in the version number. If there are only three digits, say I'm on 6.3.4 and 6.3.5 comes out, the Check For Updates seems to work fine and will tell me I need to update. If, however, there is a fourth digit in the version, like 6.3.5.2, Check For Updates reports bad information.

It is almost as if the method of checking is to look at the version number with the very last digit being the bug fix digit and everything before that being the branch. So in the case of being on 6.3.4 it determines 6.3 is the branch and looks for a bug fix revision higher than 4. This seems to work. But, when the version is 6.3.5.2, it gets confused, looking at 6.3.5 as the branch and 2 as the bug fix revision. Since there is no 6.3.5.3 version, it assumes (incorrectly) that the software is up to date.

I did not find any bugzilla reports for this in my search, so I assume it is still a problem. It is minor, but I wanted to bring it to your attention.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Help > Check for Updates
2. Help > About LibreOffice
3. Compare to latest download on libreoffice.org

Actual Results:
Check for updates reports that LibreOffice is up to date.

Expected Results:
Check for updates should have reported there is a newer version available.

Reproducible: Always

Hello Dave,
is this issue still happening ? Which is your current version ?
Comment 3 Dave 2020-05-11 15:20:04 UTC
Yes, it was still happening as of 6.3.5.2.

I'm on 6.3.6.2 now, but it was a manually installed upgrade. Check for Updates insisted I was fine. 6.3.5.2 (my previous version) was not the only version to act this way, it just took a while to notice a pattern.

It seems like any current version with four digits in it confuses Check for Updates when the newer version does not share the first three digits. For example, 6.3.5.2 -> 6.3.5.3 would work, whereas 6.3.5.2 -> 6.3.6.2 would not.

I will keep an eye out with this version (6.3.6.2). I'm guessing the odd behavior will continue if 6.3.7 comes out, but it will behave properly if 6.3.6.3 is the next release.

Hello Dave,
No, we don't plan on releasing a new minor version of LibreOffice 6.3 unless there is a security issue published.
I'm a bit surprise because this is the only report of this kind, meaning in general it works, so there might be something on your end. are you behind a proxy or is the firewall blocking LibreOffice to check it ?

If you have some time, would you mind downloaded a previous minor version from https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/ and recheck ?
Thanks in advance

This is on a home network connection and the only firewall is the Network Address Translation (NAT) type. There are no other rules. There is no proxy server.

I'll try one of the older releases. I think I still have the 6.3.5 installer on my PC as well.

If the 6.3 line is at the end of it's life, I'm happy to move up to 6.4.x and see if it happens with the next release of that one as well. It seems pointless to chase this down if it only affects 6.3 and earlier.

I will try the earlier versions an upload results as screenshots.

I downloaded and reproduced the bug with versions 6.3.5.2 and 6.3.6.1. Both claimed LibreOffice was up to date when I used Help > Check for Updates. I guess that negates my theory of it being limited to three-digit version numbers. I will upload screenshots as well.

I have downloaded and install 6.4.3.2, since I'm told there will be no more updates to the 6.3 branch. I will check periodically to see if 6.4.x exhibits the same behavior.

I'm now on the 6.4.3.2 version and I just got a notification that 6.4.4 is available. When I do Help > Check for Updates it also reports 6.4.4 is available. So whatever was going on before in 6.3.x is no longer a problem. I would recommend closing this bug as "cannot reproduce" or similar status.
