Description Rock2Climb2 2020-06-13 19:00:18 UTC
Description:
LibreOffice Writer 6.3.6.2 Bookmark keyboard short-cuts (e.g., "Go to") do not work smoothly because after selecting / highlighting a desired Bookmark, the TAB key needs to be pressed to change the focus from the Bookmark list sub-pane to the Rename button, the "G" key needs to be pressed to change focus the "Go to" button, and then the ENTER key or "G" key needs to be pressed to execute the "Go to" button. Needing to press 3 keys for the keyboard short-cut to work is a regression from Writer 6.2.8.2 32-bit where just the "G" key alone would execute the "Go to" button short-cut.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a Writer .ODT file that contains Bookmarks
2. Insert menu - Bookmark...
3. Single left Mouse-Click desired Bookmark (or TAB key four times then SPACEBAR key to highlight the first Bookmark)
4) "G" key for "Go to" button or "C" key for "Close" button keyboard short-cuts. Notice these keyboard short-cuts do NOT work.
5) TAB key (to change focus to the Rename button) - "G" key (to change focus the "Go to" button) - ENTER key or "G" key (to execute the "Go to" button). Needing to press 3 keys for the keyboard short-cut to work is a regression from Writer 6.2.8.2 32-bit where just the "G" key alone would execute the "Go to" button short-cut.

Actual Results:
Writer 6.3.6.2 32-bit Bookmark pane keyboard short-cuts associated with the under-lined letters of the buttons in the pane don't work due to the focus still being in the Bookmark list sub-pane.

Expected Results:
Bookmark pane keyboard short-cuts associated with the under-lined letters of the buttons in the pane should work like in Writer 6.2.8.2 32-bit.

Here is what I suggest to best resolve the above regression, improve Writer Bookmark UX, and match MS Word's Bookmark behavior all at the same time:

A) After single left Mouse-Clicking a desired Bookmark (or otherwise highlighting a desired Bookmark), change focus to the "Go to" button so that either the "G" key or ENTER key short-cuts move the document's contents to the Bookmark location.
B) After bringing up the Bookmark pane (i.e., Insert menu - Bookmark...), code it so that entering the first letter of a Bookmark and then pressing the DOWN-ARROW key highlights the next Bookmark in the list which starts with that letter. Suggestion A) above would then come into play so that the "Go to" button is now in focus.
C) Set the default keyboard short-cut for Bookmarks (i.e., Insert menu - Bookmark...) to be Ctrl+Shift+F5.

Implementing items A) thru C) would make the typical Writer Bookmark flow the same as MS Word, and hence make the transition to LibreOffice a bit more seam-less for people that use Bookmarks to quickly navigate to desired sections of their documents. This would also be a productivity & UX improvement from how Bookmarks currently work in Writer 6.3.6.2.
Thank you for considering my suggestions.

UI has already been reworked Bookmarks accessible from Dialog, or Find Bar in Bookmark mode, or Navigator in Bookmark mode with mix of keyboard and mouse GUI movements.

Navigator bookmark mode provide direct movement and ability to directly edit.

While the Dialog (.uno:InsertBookmark), Next Bookmark (.uno:JumpToNextBookmark), and Previous Bookmark (.uno:JumpToPrevBookmark) are all available for user to assign to keyboard shortcut.

When you say "UI has already been reworked Bookmarks accessible from Dialog, or Find Bar in Bookmark mode, or Navigator in Bookmark mode with mix of keyboard and mouse GUI movements.", what Writer version are you referring to?

7.0.0beta1, or current master/7.1.0 for the Navigator changes.

You already at 6.3 have ability to assign the keyboard shortcuts for 'To Next Bookmark'/'To Previous Bookmark', search for "Bookmark" while on the Customize dialog's 'Keyboard' tab for Writer.
