Whatever you pick it's wrong. So why not the last character of the word, as it seems to be?
We discussed the topic in the design meeting. First of all, the use case is a bit far-fetched as such complex formatting is unlikely (and not recommended). Since any solution is wrong and has probably a lot of exceptions, the best and most transparent way is to take the formatting from the first character. As implemented, so resolving as NAB.
