Description Octavio Alvarez 2020-12-16 19:14:29 UTC
Description:
When using a dark-designed theme, styles with automatic color are properly previewed in the Styles and Formatting pane regardless of the pane dark background. However, once the text is set to a dark color manually (like 80% gray) they become invisible / unreadable on the pane.

Considering that the color combination is valid on the virtual paper on screen, and thus, usable, they should be visible too on the pane.

Same thing happens when inverting the colors: with regular Adwaita and a dark page with text set to 10% gray: the styles on the pane become almost invisible.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install the Adwaita-Dark theme and activate it in the system.
2. Create a new LibreOffice Writer document.
3. Open the Styles and Formatting pane. Observe that the pane has a dark background but the text is bright-colored despite being --correctly-- black in the document itself. This is because text color is set to "automatic".
4. Right click on the Default Paragraph Style and choose Modify.
5. On the Font Effects tab, set the text color to 80% gray (or something dark like that).

Actual Results:
Style previews are unreadable because of lack of contrast.

Expected Results:
Style previews should be readable just like in the page (dark text over white background).

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
Suggestion: previews for styles without a fixed background should be painted in the same background as... the current page?

Workaround:
- Turn "show previews" off.

Additional observations:
- When the font is set to automatic, text in the on-screen paper is painted black and text in the style previews is painted light-gray (or white?)

I set the version to 7.0.0.3 because 7.0.0.2 is not on the list.

Octavio, unfortunately nobody could confirm this bug report for half a year. So I'd like to ask, if it is still valid. Could you please try to reproduce it with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/ ? I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' if the bug is still present in the latest version.

Issue is still present: when the system is in dark mode, if a style has its font color set to dark gray with no background specified, the style will be unreadable on the Styles and Formatting pane because the pane will have a dark background, despite the Writer page being white.

Please attach sample document and put in a screenshot of what you see.

I can reproduce this problem.

This is not only related to Adwaita, but also happens in KDE Plasma using Breeze.

The problem is that in dark mode, the styles sidebar uses a dark color as background instead of using the document color. So if you manually set the font color to a dark color but do not change the background, then this problem will happen.

Solving this issue would totally change the UX of the styles sidebar, so let's hear the opinion of the UX team.

Here I changed the font color of the Adressee style to a dark gray, so it becomes barely visible over a dark background.

However, my document color is white. So I wonder if we should use the document color instead.

What I understand install a theme meaning some tools > options > personalization. Can you please describe the issue more clearly including the version?
