Created attachment 169928 [details] Dokument with gutter for testing The feature 'page gutter' was implemented with bug 91920. It allows the user to distinguish in the margins between an area, which will be consumed by binding and an area, which gives a visible margin. LibreOffice has the view method 'Book view'. There already the distance between the pages was removed to create a view, which would correspond to an open book. But in case a page gutter is defined, the inner margin looks too wide, because that area, which will be consumed by binding is shown too. So the user gets a wrong view of the page design. Enhancement request: Add an item in the view menu to enable/disable of showing the page gutter area.
I added keyword "needsUXEval", because it's an enhancement request.
IMO, we rather have too many view options right now. Another one for very rare case is confusing for most users. Plus, setting up a gutter (or any other property) should result in a corresponding WYSIWYG visualization. My take: show the gutter as requested in bug 140564, also in book mode. => WF
We discussed the topic in the design meeting. The gutter is an expert property and most users neither know it nor need to apply it. And option to "Show Gutter in Book Mode" is most likely unclear for users as you need to understand gutter and book mode. Plus, the View menu is a too long right now for small screens. OTOH, an option to hide the gutter not only in book mode could be a handy function. We discussed to combine it with "Show Whitespace" but discarded the idea as the two are not related to each other. The recommendation is to implement the UNO command but don't add it to the menu by default. For mouse-driven interaction, clicking the gutter could collapse it to a minimum size and clicking again would expand. The Show/Hide function should do the same.
