Description Ransom 2021-06-04 18:02:34 UTC
Description:
Since version 7.1.x.x_x64 the style sheet “Preformatted Text” cannot really be hidden anymore. The “Hide” selection is still there and can be clicked on, but after a restart of LO Writer the style sheet is there again. This phenomenon appears with all 7.1.x.x_64 versions, also with the Dev_7.2.0.alpha1_x64 version (see also attachments).

Actual Results:
After a restart of LO Writer the style sheet “Preformatted Text” is there again.

Expected Results:
The style sheet “Preformatted Text” should be hided.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

I think the list on selection it's predefined, so the hidden only applies on the list of styles in sidebar.
Comment 4 Ransom 2021-06-05 09:38:23 UTC
Hiding the style sheets in the list of styles in sidebar causes them to disappear from the selection list, which is what the “Hide” function is for. And: Even if the hide function only referred to the list of styles in sidebar (which – as said before – made no sense), there is still a bug here, because after closing and opening LO Writer, the style sheet “Preformatted Text” reappears in the list of styles in sidebar.

Hiding the style, remains hide for the file after save-close LO-Open LO-Open the file, but not for other files.

So for me clearly there is not a bug.

BTW 'made no sense', looks a very depreciating expression from your side, maybe you are the 'sense' owner.

Did you create a new default template, which has style "Preformatted Text" hidden?
Comment 7 Ransom 2021-06-05 12:20:55 UTC
@m.a.riosv
Your Quote: Hiding the style, remains hide for the file after save-close LO […] So for me clearly there is not a bug.

This is wrong. This may be true for all style sheets, but not for the one named in this bug report, namely the style “Preformatted Text”. In addition, this behavior – namely that the style “Preformatted Tex”t cannot be hidden – only occurs from version 7.1.xx onwards.

It remains the same: It “makes no sens”e to select “Hide” for the mentioned style sheet if it then appears in the list anyway. And: It also “makes no sense” if someone comments and has not really understood the problem at all.

@Uwe Auer
What do you mean? Anyway, I didn’t create a new template. The thing is: I used LO Writer since version 4.x.x.x and know LO Writer quite passably. When I recently switched from version 7.0.4.2_x64 to version 7.1.3.2_x64, the “Preformatted Text” style appeared for the first time in all my carefully created document templates. I wanted to get rid of this one, because it interferes with my list. It can apparently be hidden, but selecting “Hide” does not affect the list, and after closing and opening LO Writer, this style also reappears in the sidebar.

I first posted the problem here in the German language forum:
https://www.libreoffice-forum.de/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=34266&sid=95162f4c866a9a8116e9d7a2068f8e55

I think that there is a bug here.

I mean: Hiding is not a global setting, but a property of the the document. And if your template (or existing document) doesn't hide the style, then the setting is visible within the document. If your default writer template contains the style, the style is visible in all new documents as well. And if you want the style not appear in new documents, you **need** to create a customized default template having the style hidden. In that sense, I asked: "Did you create a new default template, which has style "Preformatted Text" hidden?". If not, and you recently reset your user profile, you got back the style showing up on new documents.

PS: Why do you consequently use the phrase "style sheet", if the issue seems to have absolutely nothing to do with sheets and calc, but "paragraph styles"?

Hello Uwe,

thank you very much that you still stay tuned.

I make an effort to find the exact equivalents in English by briefly starting with the English language interface. How I got (wrongly) to “style sheet” I don’t remember. I just started the English interface again, and you are absolutely right: it must be “Paragraph Style”.

OK, I understand. No, I have not reset the user profile recently. I’ll put it this way: If you don’t mind installing LO once in a 7.0.x.x version and once in a 7.1.x.x version in e.g. a VM, you’ll find that in the latter version you can’t hide the “Preformatted Text” Paragraph Style, although this option seems to be available. It doesn’t matter if you are using a freshly installed LO or a LO in which you have imported your personal user profile, and it doesn’t matter if you are using a new default template or any special one. In the 7.0.x.x version the Paragraph Style “Preformatted text” can be hidden normally (as usual), in the 7.1.x.x version not anymore. Try it (with freshly set up, unchanged LO), and you will experience exactly the same thing I am trying to describe here.

In version 7.2.0.1 the paragraph style “Preformatted Text” is still present resp. can still not be hidden.

I'm kind of hijacking this report for few question at UX

1 The pre-formatted text entry wasn't in the drop down in prior versions.. Now it's added, and hide in the sidebar doesn't hide in the drop down.

It could be argued that it should be hidden from the drop down too.

2 You can hide entry's in the sidebar, but how can you unhide something (say clicked the wrong entry) or I want to see all embedded styles (and names?).

3 Should it be possible to add/remove entry's from the drop down style picker. Kind of thinking of star system. So you add/remove entry's to drop down (derived from sidebar styles)?

--
Note 1: Hide is temporarily also in 6.2 (except for template). So I'm not really following comment 0. [See comment 5 and comment 8]

Note 2: I didn't search for existing enhancement requests covering the above, so might be discussed already

The Stylist (sidebar deck showing styles) provides different features than other controls. Hiding there allows to find appropriate styles more quickly. For example, you don't want to see letter related paragraph styles (sender, complimentary close, etc.) in template A but no headings in template B. All shipped styles are shown for new documents unless you save - or load a template, as mentioned before.

The dropdown list is generated from a different source. It does not align with the Stylist and has its own purpose. You also don't automatically hide styles from the main menu. While customization of the main menu is possible, the dropdown is hard-coded (though it can be removed completely). I don't think we need more flexibility.

Several styles were added to the main menu for bug 91781 (see also https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/18579/) to educate and foster the use of styles rather than direct formatting. The "Heading 4" and "Preformatted Text" entries were added in https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/105008 (no reference to BZ).

Putting all together, I concur with NAB. But since the ticket was reopen I'd prefer when Dirk resolves now. Or maybe some aspect is missing...

Ok, I understand, then this is intended and not a bug. Personally it bothers me that since version 7.x.x.x the paragraph style “Preformatted Text” can’t be hidden, because I like to have it clear and every not wanted (or used) paragraph style is one too many. But if I am the only one who is bothered by this resp. would like to have more “flexibility” in that regard, then let this “bug” be set to “resolved” if you like.

Let's wait for Andreas' comment since he submitted the patch (without BZ reference!).
Comment 15 andreas_k 2021-08-17 11:03:15 UTC
The paragraph style “Preformatted Text” was added to the DropDown menu, cause it was also available in the Menubar and for me it's a bit strange to have styles available with the Style Menubar but not with the Style DropDown selector. In addition the Notebookbar Style preview show also the previews of the Styles from the DropDown menu.

So the patch https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/105008 was done to bring more consistancy to different areas of LibO where paragraph styles were used.
