Description Roger Paradise 2021-09-10 15:25:12 UTC
I just installed Excel from Microsoft 365. I have several .xlsx files created with LibreOffice Calc, using version 7.0.6 and 7.1.6. When I try to open these files in Excel, it says they are corrupt and will not allow opening. If I rename a file extension to .xls and try opening again in Excel, it says it may be corrupt and asks if I want to open it anyway and then lets me open it. If I rename the file extension to .ods, Excel is able to open it with no errors.

To sum up, for the following Calc created files:
.xlsx - Excel gives an error and cannot open
.xls - Excel gives an error and then allows opening
.ods - Excel opens without any problem

Obviously this is a problem for sharing spreadsheet files between a mix of LibreOffice and Excel users.

File that Excel errors trying to open

Excel errors during open. However if you rename the extension to .ods, Excel will open it.

I now realize how to reproduce it. I believe these files were created from the beginning with a .ods extension. I then renamed the extension to .xlsx, because I always like to use that extension for sharing with others.

When creating a Calc file, does it change something inside the file based on the saved as extension type?

You can just use Save as command in File menu and select XSLX file type there. Do it and check if Office 365 can open the XLSX file

Ok. I just tried doing a Save as to XLSX and now Excel can open the file. Thanks.
I renamed this bug to reflect more accurately what I had done.

Of course if you just change the file extension then Office 365 will not open the file.

And it's not a LibreOffice's bug and not a bug at all, it's just an user error

So, I close this one, as NOTABUG

Thank you.
