Description peter josvai 2021-09-14 14:04:48 UTC
there are 3 things that could be improved around the INSERT SECTION (from file) functionality

#1 when in the edit section we opt "remove section", it should be removed not merged into the text... (these are two totally different options, both great and useful, but different, aren't they?)

#2 when a section has been inserted as a linked document, sure, we can see its borders clearly, but writing even a space or a new line before the section should be made easy... especially when that section is at the very beginning of the text, that is, when above the text there is only the header ...

or when there are two consecutive sections without even a space in between ...

#3 the concept is already pretty clear about inserting text

b.) from file
c.) as a section
a.) or just inserting a section

however, under the "LINK" checkbox there is the "DDE" otion... which in my experience takes the user way out of what they think to be the context :)

I, for example, have to google... then find some explanation...
then I don't understand why it is regarding calc... not writer..

also dynamic data exchange pretty sounds like what insert file as a section is..
that is, not embedding the text but maintaining a link, a reference to a file...

so, I'm usually reading for about 5 minutes till I realize that when DDE is enabled, the field below it will change from a file reference to a command...

ANYWAY: I'm only trying to illustrate that DDE is kind of off context when you're inserting a file's text as a section... and it should be somehow separated...
or / and having a "?" and a brief explanation...

cause as it is now, it is misleading... making you think that what you want to do has a 3rd way, too... (or 4th?)

Point #1: I disagree because it is easy to remove a section and its content by selecting if and press delete key. But it is not so easy to transfer the content of a section in the text and remove the section. This function does that in one click.

Point #2: to insert a paragraph before the section, event if it is at the very start of the document, set the cursor at the start of the section and press alt+Enter. Same behavior with a table.

Point #3: did you try to click the help button in the insertion dialog? https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/swriter/01/04020100.html?System=UNIX&DbPAR=WRITER&HID=modules/swriter/ui/sectionpage/SectionPage#bm_id3145414

hi,

you say: it's easy to select the section and delete it (or as you put it, click the delete button)

but I think you only wrote this without trying...
for this is impossible

it is, cause you will keep your inserted file write protected...
so, after selecting it, you can't delete the section... even though you suggested it'd work

note: please bear in mind that I'm not asking for advice on how to operate LO... I'm making suggestions on how it could be improved...

#2
the "alt+enter" solution is something that "ask libreoffice" users visit very frequently, I believe...
this is basically a "secret solution"...
not ergonomic..
you have to learn the secret code and use it...
I've been using it... also, I have googled it up at least 2 times...

my suggestion is to make this thing sort of transparent...
starting with making it clear where to put the cursor to even get a context menu...

anyway, a developer will know what making it clear means...

#3
I can't say I appreciate your style: did I try to click on the help button?...

I don't do help buttons...
what I was suggesting is a "?" which is used to provide specific info.. a help button is only good for people with lots of time...
others use google...

either way, it is the same page...
and it is NOT GOOD... as I tried to explain... didn't work... it happens...
but let me "try" again..

under DDE... "DDE" is mentioned 3 times... without any explanation whatsoever...
this is not a good help document...

if someone wants to insert a document as a section they will not necessarily know what DDE is... nor is it necessary for them to know it...
so, some info on DDE could come handy...
if you read the DDE section all the way, you'll realize that there is no explanation regarding what DDE is...

a specific info on mouseover at a "?" is a completely different thing...
like "use this option if you want to... bl-bl-bl"...

--------------------
bottom line:

I don't need any of these suggested improvements...
my problem is not that I can't get this great application do what I want...
my problem is that the application could be -- at some points -- structured better...

thanks for your opinion anyway...

Sorry, you think wrong.

Peter, since there is "One topic per bug report" as basic rule in bugzilla, it's almost impossible to follow different suggestions in one report. So please decide on which suggestion do you want to focus here and open new reports for the other ones. Thank you.
