By short space I guess you mean "Small Gap" as found in the Formats section of the Elements. It seems to be working for me in the same way, if I insert from keyboard. Please provide some evidence that it is not working (screenshot). Set to NEEDINFO. Change back to UNCONFIRMED after you have provided the screenshot.
