Description sdc.blanco 2022-02-09 11:14:55 UTC
1. If a template is set as default, then the dropdown menu for the Manage button in the Template Manager (Ctrl+Shift+N) will show a "Reset as Default" option.

2. At present, if a template is selected, the Manage button does not show as "Set as Default" option. (it only appears in the context menu).

Suggestion: Add the "Set as Default" option to the Manage menu.

Reason 1: Given that it is possible to "reset" from Manage, then it would be useful to know that it can also be "set" in Manage.

Reason 2: There have been many changes in the Template Manager interface recently, so this suggestion is mostly along the lines of "polish" or "refinement".

Would rather abstain from doing this:

* It opens Pandora's box and we could also add Edit to the Manage dropdown
* Manage belongs (primarily) to the categories, it combines the various functions we had in the past at the bottom of the dialog; the context menu at the template itself clearly belongs to this context
* the function is Reset _All Default_ Templates, there is no pendant to set all

Other opinions than my NAB?

?? who is proposing that? The focus is only on "set/reset default" - which is relevant across templates, not just an individual template.

Not entirely correct.

Set your filter to "Text Documents" (for example), then you will see "Reset Default Text Document" (independently of which category is selected, and if you have set a default text template).

If you use the "Reset" option (from Manage), then nothing will appear in Manage the next time you open the dropdown menu. (An obvious pendant which is being proposed is the option to set a default template for that module).

We currently have two main cases here.

1) When "All applications" is selected in the "Filter" dropdown menu:

In this case, if any template is set for any type of documents, than the "Manage" menu allows to "Reset All Default Templates".

It would make some sense to have a "Set as Default XXX Document" (where XXX is Text, Presentation, Spreadsheet...) in the "Manage" dropdown menu based on the type of the selected template.

2) When a specific document type is selected in the "Filter" dropdown menu:

When you right-click a template and then choose "Set as Default", the "Reset Default XXX" will become available in the "Manage" menu.

Here we could have the "Set as Default" as well in the "Manage" menu.

----------

However, I think the current implementation is discoverable enough. I believe it is natural for users who want to set a template as default to right-click it and expect to see a "Set as default" option, which we currently offer.

Therefore, adding this option to the "Manage" menu wouldn't make the "Set as Default" feature more discoverable, so it might not be worth the effort.

Moreover, having to right-click a template to set it as default clearly shows to the user which template will be set as default. As for resetting the default template, it makes sense to have this option in the "Manage" menu since it'll be applied to the entire document type. This is more convenient to the user.

In summary, implementing this feature wouldn't hurt consistency. But it might not be worth the effort because it doesn't bring much benefit.
