In LO Draw it is possible to add "Blur" to a shadow. However, this is currently not supported in LO Writer (see Paragraph / Character Style > Borders > Shadow Style).

My guess it would add more realism to text and table shadows.

SUGGESTION: Add a Blur property to Borders Shadow Style.

Couldn't see a border tab in character or paragraph dialog in Draw (only in Graphic Styles Dialog).

Graphic objects in Draw and paragraphs, characters and frames in Writer have technically different shadows. One is a set of draw:shadow-foo attributes, the other is one attribute style:shadow.

You can use a Text Box in the meantime as workaround. The text box has blur shadow because it is a graphic object. You can anchor the text box as character to keep it in the text flow.

Nevertheless it is a valid request.

This could also apply on image,
It is not possible to have realistic shadow on image.

The UI do not allow to set a blur width on the Borders tab of the image properties dialog

+1 - please implement this to help LO look slightly modern. Current shadows look like something from Word '85...

I agree that this is an unfortunate omission from the application, and I think I found a workable alternative until this is fixed. This worked for me, I'm using LO 25.8.2.2:

Insert your image where you need it in your document.

Below your image, insert a rectangular shape.

Right-click your shape, choose "Area..."

Open the Shadow tab, make the settings you need.

Set the anchor for your shape and image to be the same (for me, I chose Paragraph).

When done, drag your new shape on top of your image, and place it so that all edges are perfectly aligned over your image. You shouldn't be able to see your image.

Right-click the rectangular shape, choose "Arrange", then "Send to back".

Voila!

You've just placed a shape with a shadow completely underneath your image, and because the shape is underneath your image, it looks like your image has a shadow. Be sure the anchors allow the two image to be placed on top of each other.
