Description Tim 2022-08-25 20:01:10 UTC
Description:
I have a very long web document. Most likely the longest you have ever seen. It crashes every time I turn around. It could be minutes or 1/2 hour at a time. Also it moves things around in the document. I follow a precise guideline so that all the documents are the same color-code at a certain space in the document. I have recreated the document several times. If this can't be fixed, I will need to return to using MS Word and that would be a shame.

I also need to be able to print this off on a SC-T2475 printer as on sheet not 4 that it shows me.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.You need my document
2.
3.

Actual Results:
You will need to be able to have my document is there a way to upload it?

Expected Results:
I end up starting all over again

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

I could not crash Writer when opening your document with:

Version: 7.3.5.2 / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 184fe81b8c8c30d8b5082578aee2fed2ea847c01
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

or

Version: 7.4.0.0.alpha1+ / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 3676fb9d7b505d9f8079008b41e423b54663a86a
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-AU (en_AU.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

...although I have only played with the document for a few minutes.

As you used the version 7.4.0.3 for first version affected, could you please clarify if you have actually tested it in that version?

Could you also please try resetting your user profile and see if it still crashes? -> https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#Help_wizard_.28LibreOffice_5.3_and_newer.29

Regarding the second issue about the printer, I would recommend asking on ask.libreoffice.org unless it is an actual bug (in which case it would be great if you could open a separate bug report).

I am way over my head on this. Crashed in safe mode. after 30 min. I only used Version: 7.3.5.2. How do I get the other version? I will be more than happy to try.

As to the printer i followed the link I was confused at what i was looking at. I'm not a computer person at all, its all foreign to me.

Could you try this https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/FirstSteps ?
You can also try 7.4.0.

If nothing works, don't hesitate to use MsOffice if you got it.

You can always download the latest version from:

I have clarified in the metadata that this is about Writer, not Writer Web. I have also changed the title to something more descriptive.

The first thing I would try would be to reset the user profile, or test in safe mode:

Help > Restart in Safe Mode > Restart > Continue in Safe Mode

Please let us know if it still crashes in safe mode.
Comment 7 Tim 2022-08-26 21:51:12 UTC
I ended up downloading 4.7.
Has not crashed yet.

Hi Tim

I changed the status back to "unconfirmed" for now, because the "resolved - fixed" status means we have identified what code modification resolved the issue.

I have a couple more questions:

- You said version 4.7, but do you actually mean 7.4 ? Could you please paste the information of the version that works as expected here (Help > About LibreOffice) ?
- I originally changed the component from "Writer Web" to "Writer" but realised you might have actually meant that you used the web editor in Writer. Are you actually using "View > Web" when you edit this document?

Cheers
Comment 9 Tim 2022-08-31 18:06:03 UTC
Yes I got 7.4, I transposed the numbers.
However it also crashed on me. Just when I thought it was safe. It Crashed. I also had three documents up at the same time switching back and forth between them.
I now have both versions, on two machines. they both crash when doing more than one document.
Comment 10 Stéphane Guillou (stragu) 2022-09-09 07:30:06 UTC
- Does the crash only happen when you have several documents open?
- Does the crash only happen when you are editing HTML files?
- Are you actually using "View > Web" when you edit this document, or the normal view?
- Has there been a dialog appear after a crash to send a crash report? If so, it would be great to have the link to it.
Comment 11 Tim 2022-09-09 14:11:02 UTC
It seems to crash only when I have several documents open.

I only editing in normal view. I only use the htm view to edit title.

I usually have anywhere to three to six documents open at a time.

When it crashes it gives me no other popup to let me know it crashes.

All of a sudden everything just stops I have no control on movement in the document. then they all shutdown. then I open LibreOffice back up. It recovers all my documents. I click finish then they all open up again and then I have to make some reedits again and then continue on. I save often so that I do not have to reedit a whole lot in the document.

REPRODUCED

Steps followed
1. Open the web document
2. And checked on Writer version of Libre Office 74.0.0alpha
3. same as it. It crashes every time I turn around it. I have recreated the document several times

Environment
Libre Office 74.0.0alpha, Linux Mint 20.3
Comment 13 Stéphane Guillou (stragu) 2023-01-29 12:05:04 UTC
Thank you for your answers, Tim!

I wouldn't give too much weight to comment 12, it's Saba's only contribution on Bugzilla and it doesn't give any extra details as to how the crash might have been reproduced.
Let's keep it Windows-only for now.

I have tested again with 5 documents opened on Windows 10, including the attached HTML document, editing for about 10 minutes, and could not reproduce:

Version: 7.4.5.1 (x64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 9c0871452b3918c1019dde9bfac75448afc4b57f
CPU threads: 4; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19045; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: en-GB (en_GB); UI: en-GB
Calc: threaded

What I gathered so far is:
- Not related to Skia as Tim was able to reproduce in safe mode
- Likely related to multiple windows
- Tim was able to reproduce on two different machines

What I think could help find out more:
- Figuring out if it is really related to the HTML file. Does the crash happen also when no HTML document is opened?
- Is there a specific action done right before it crashes? Finding consistent steps to crash it would really help.
- I could ask you to get setup to get a debug trace but I think that might be too big an ask. Just in case: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/How_to_get_a_backtrace_with_WinDbg
