Description Eyal Rozenberg 2022-12-19 19:10:20 UTC
I don't see the use/benefit of displaying templates of different module in the same grid-view, with no distinction among them, in the start center.

I doubt that the module-specific views of templates are what users would be after - always, i.e. a user would not want to be oblivious to what module the new document will be created in.

Instead, the module-specific templates should be listed on the side bar to begin with, rather than only being accessible via a combo-box / drop-down submenu.

The thumbnail views of templates are useful. Previously they were accessed by split button from SC menu bar. The listbox/drop list was added to the backing window of the SC.

We'd looked at doing tabs on the SC backing window when SC was being worked up but rejected it.

The SC provides thumbnail previews of existing documents, and thumbnails of the available templates by module. Templates have to sorted/organized in some fashion -old split button, a drop list by module (or all), or a tab by module.

The multi-mode/all templates is fine otherwise as it lists them all including any customized/extension based templates (think a corporate setting with well styled templates).

What is missing is ability to purge the default bundled templates.

-1 to a blanket dropping the multi-mode/all templates view; but open to revisiting template controls as present on the SC backing window.

I think perhaps I wasn't clear about what I'm asking. I like the thumbnail view! It's fine by me. I mean, I haven't given it a lot of thought, but no complaints from my end. My one issue is with there being unified set of template thumbnail for all modules, as opposed to separate thumbnail views for each module.

> The multi-mode/all templates is fine otherwise as it lists them all

That's the problem. It's bad to list Draw templates next to Impress templates.

Just put those in the thumbnail view for the module it's a template for.

But the SC is agnostic, when it is active (currently only on startup until bug 77590 gets some effort) there is no associated active module. So what should the drop list show?

And currently "All Applications" as that alone makes sense--what other entry would be appropriate?

IF bug 77590 gets some love, then we could filter the listbox to match the active module. Until then...? With no entry, no templates shown? Writer's templates by default? Impress's?

With move the list box, dropping the split button, it would cause more confusion to change.

Also, where did we move the 'Manage Templates' entry. It used to be on the Split button. Now is only present on the main menu File -> Templates

The SC let's you create a document in the module of your choice. It lets you filter the templates by the module of your choice.

Put the choice of module of the left bar, and show templates for the selected module.

Which is the way it was before we moved it to a listbox!

I also do not see benefit from removing this filter option. => NAB

No. Before, the default was the all-module templates, and you could enter a submenu to get the module-specific templates. I'm suggesting we _only_ have the module-specific templates, and not in a submenu.

That's not what I'm suggesting.

Woot?

Anyway, how do you expect the filter to be initialized when started? With Writer templates? What if the Writer module is not installed?
Comment 9 Roman Kuznetsov 2022-12-21 11:32:51 UTC
Strictly -1.

Eyal, if you don't see benefits this doesn't mean other people also don't see

Rejected by the majority

No filter initialization. Separate display of template per module, just like there is a separate item per module on the left bar for creating a new document in that module.

Who did not understand what I was suggesting?
