Description Eyal Rozenberg 2023-03-06 21:51:59 UTC
Rohingya is an eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken in northern Rakhine State (Arakan) in Burma / Myanmar and in the neighbouring Chiittagong Division of Bangladesh. There are about 1.8 million speakers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohingya_people
https://omniglot.com/writing/rohingya.htm

but - Rohingya is not part of the list of languages in the RTL language group languages drop-down box in the font dialog. Why?

Also, a written script for Rohingya named the Hanifi Rohingya script was developed in 1980:

https://omniglot.com/writing/hanifi.htm

so it's not as though Rohingya could be subsumed by Arabic or something.

Because we do not add all existing 1800 languages to the list?

If needed one can enter the language tag rhg-MM in the CTL language list's combobox and hit Enter. Next time it will be displayed as
"Rohingya (Myanmar [Burma]) {rhg-MM}".

Or rhg-Rohg-MM for
"Rohingya (Hanifi, Myanmar [Burma]) {rhg-Rohg-MM}"

Since LibreOffice 7.5 the assignment to CTL vs Western also works as intended, automatically. Additionally there's the acor_*.dat file language tag mechanism to permanently add it to an installation.
See https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/7.5#Language_tags

We may consider adding an entry for one of the next releases, specifically for the reason that it is a RTL language, which isn't automatically detected from the language tag yet.

Ok, fair enough, but - what's the criterion? There are 2 variants of Yiddish and 25 variants of Arabic, for example.

Interesting. But - will a user be able to guess that's possible?

Many languages that are defined by MS were added, because the mapping to the LCID was needed anyway. See https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/openspecs/windows_protocols/ms-lcid/70feba9f-294e-491e-b6eb-56532684c37f

Additionally we added languages upon request, or if it turned out a language is commonly used. i.e. all LANGUAGE_USER_... in

Documentation seems to be behind on that. Progress was mentioned in the release notes.
