Description garethic 2023-03-26 11:01:10 UTC
Description:
I've noticed that the context menu tools for arranging images on the page, such as 'Align -> Left', 'Wrap -> Right', dragging the image on the page, work properly until you add a caption.
At that point the the image cannot be dragged properly and doing so (if you can) moves the image but not the caption. Alignment tools cease working. Deleting the image leaves the caption on the page and an blank area

I believe the problem relates to Frames: Writer adds a Frame to the image if it has a caption. you can select the image but not the frame. Moving the image moves it within the frame.
To delete the blank area mentioned above you need to go to Navigator, select the Frame & delete it there.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Paste an image into Writer doc
2. Add a caption
3. Attempt to edit the positioning of the image + caption.

Actual Results:
Behaviour when dragging a captioned image or aligning left or right became unexpected, chaotic & unresponsive.

Expected Results:
A captioned image should be positionable in the same way as an uncaptioned image. If a frame has been added then there should be some indication of this & it should be selectable & draggable. This may be one of the few situations where tool tips are applicable

Reproducible: Always

When you insert a caption, image and caption are put together into a frame. The outer positioning properties are transferred from the image to the frame. To move the captioned image in relation to the text, you first have to select the frame and then you can move it.

There is a very thin gray line at the edge of the frame. To select the frame click on this line. The reactive area of this gray line is very small.

If it is difficult for you to hit this area, you can use the "Navigator" in the sidebar. Open its branch "Frame" and double-click on the frame, which belongs to the image. Now the frame is in drag-and-drop mode with handles and you can move it.

If you still cannot grip the frame with the mouse, you can move the frame with the arrow keys. Combining the arrow keys with the Shift-key makes large move steps and combining them with the Alt-key makes small, pixel-wide move steps.

Please try these tips and tell us whether it solves your problems.

Hi, thanks for getting back. And so fast!
Huh. I just selected the frame and dragged the image+caption. It depends on what side you approach from. You cannot select it approaching from the right, where I normally keep my mouse cursor. Other sides are OK.

From the right border I always end up selecting-dragging the image, leaving the caption behind, as indicated by the small blue squares on the border.

Another odd thing is that, with the frame unselected, I am able to edit the caption text directly from the Writer interface. I would expect that to edit the caption I would need to select the frame first, giving it focus.

I'm still not totally familiar with the Navigator but it's not acting as I'd expect. I'd expect an item selected in Navigator would show it had focus - small blue squares. Conversely, I'd expect a selected item to be highlighted in Navigator. Currently, to identify something in Navigator I need to right click it -> Properties -> Options -> Name, then use that to identify it in Navigator.

Thanks again for everything. Now that I'm more familiar with Writer it's becoming a easy & intuitive to use. I'm using it for university level notes and really appreciate being able to focus on the information & clear presentation, rather than the interface.

Cheers

Sorry, but it's not clear to me, if there is anything left from your initial report. Or can we close this bug?

(Final)
My issue finally resolved to this: when a caption was added to an image, a frame was implicitly created, of which I was unaware. When I moved the image I could only do so within the frame, leaving the caption behind. This is because I approached the frame from the right. After filing the bug I discovered that approaching from any other side allowed me to select the frame & so move both image & caption together.
Side note: I have selected 'Do not draw frame borders' (or similar) for a much clearer presentation. These may have alerted me to the creation of the new frame.
To recap, if I approach the mouse cursor to the Frame+Image+Caption from the right, I can only select the image. From left, top & bottom the cursor encounters the frame first, then the image.
If that counts as a bug, then it's a bug. I hope I have been able to clarify - I realise how hard it is to communicate these things.
