It is not possible to specify the tic interval in months or years, only in days for xy-plots. To make easily readable diagram of time series data where the time points are not given at regular intervals spanning multiple months/years you should be able to have tic marks at the 1st,2nd,.. of each month or even just mark 1st Jan of each year.

Can you please provide an example file for us to test, as an attachment here? Settings will depend on the chart type you are using.
