Description Le Lord 2023-08-31 07:29:45 UTC
Description:
I am migrating from MS Word to LO Writer. One of the key features that convinced me is the ability to arrange text, pictures or tables in FRAMES which are very similar to 'Text boxes' in MS Word.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to GROUP the frames to this day (I am using 7.5.4.2).

Would it be possible to implement such a VERY USEFUL feature ?
It should be accessible by selecting both frames using the 'Maj' key and then right click and 'group' the frames. Their positioning or their copying would be linked.

Actual Results:
No grouping feature for Frames

Expected Results:
Frames could be grouped. Position & copying would be linked.

Reproducible: Always

I'm updating the title to better convey your request.

Reminds me of the limitation with multi-select - and therefore grouping - of images (bug 34438).

You can multi-select text boxes with Shift (not ctrl) and group. But not frames. And I cannot fully agree with the use case since Writer is meant for structured text. Draw/Impress allow to group text boxes, tables, and images OTOH.

I wonder if that's possible at all (we are restricted by the file format and the need for interoperability). Regina, any insights?

From point of file format a "Frame" in Writer is the same as a "Textbox". Both are <draw:frame> elements in ODF. Only LibreOffice makes the artificial distinction between "Frame" and "Textbox". The distinction is made by "Has a parent style".

A group is represented by a <draw:g> element in ODF. And that may contain a mix of of the allowed elements. For allowed elements see https://docs.oasis-open.org/office/OpenDocument/v1.3/os/part3-schema/OpenDocument-v1.3-os-part3-schema.html#__RefHeading__1415834_253892949.

Since there is no blocker we should implement the grouping capability.

I downloaded the latest version of LibreOffice and grouping option for frames is still not implemented despite the last comment implying it should be.
Have I missed something?

(And great overall work for the software, the management of frames/text boxes is much better programmed in LibreOffice than MS Word, the latter tends to overuse microprocessor resources, LibreOffice does not hence easier work on more limited computers).

There was no change implied. This is something that is supported by the ODF format, but it is not yet implemented in LO.
I am categorising it with meta bug 94587, someone might be able to pick it up.
But I suppose bug 128394 should be fixed first.

That's great to hear! :)
