Pop-up menu showing "Replace..."

When working in a Writer Document, it would be very helpful if you could select the image that you wish to change by replacing directly from the pop-up menu.

You are able to select an image and "Edit:Paste special" to directly replace an image from the clip board.

At the moment the pop-up menu has only "Replace..." which will only select an image file (jpg|png|gif).

It would be really helpful if you could use the same pop-up menu to replace an image from the clipboard.

Wow. Today I ran into this issue again and wanted to put in another enhancement request as it slows down my workflow.

Once you have an image sized and referenced in a document and you want to update this image, the only way is to replace the image from a file. It should allow you to do it from an image in the clipboard as Word. Note that this is standard in MS Office so would help if LO also has this functional parity.

Still an issue in LO 24.2.6

Hello Bunkem,

Thank you for reporting the bug.
Unfortunately without clear steps to reproduce it, we cannot track down the origin of the problem.
Please provide a clearer set of step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce the problem.
I have set the bug's status to 'NEEDINFO'. Please change it back to 'UNCONFIRMED' once the steps are provided.

As a note, have you tried to right click on the image and just "Paste" from the pop up menu/context menu? This is another option besides going to Edit > Paste special in the menu bar.

Hello @Nicole A,
This is an enhancement request.
The present behaviour of LO is that the Replace image works only with saved image files not from images that are in the clipboard.

Where I think this enhancement should be added is in the pop-up menu that appears when you "ctrl+click" WIN or "cmd+click" Mac while the mouse pointer is on an image in a Writer document. The Pop-up menu you see in the png image above, is shown.

When you select "replace image", the menu items are only to replace from an image file. There is no option like in MS Word to "replace image from clipboard".

I hope this describes the enhancement request better.

The context menu has a Replace... command that does what you want. I don't understand what exactly is missing. Please describe your use case "I want to <> by doing <>. When using <> the fact <> hinders me to achieve the goal." Of course it is welcome to share ideas how to improve "it would be helpful if <>".

And if I paste over a selected image the clipboard content replaces it keeping the dimension.

Hi.

I'll have to try the "paste over the selected image the clipboard contents replaces it keeping the dimensions". That hasn't been my experience but I'll try again.

The enhancement was to get function parity with Microsoft Word and Powerpoint. Windows has this irritant that everything has to be right-click to bring up a menu. So when you use MS Office on Windows you get used to that.

Say I want to update an image in either Word or Powerpoint. If the image is in a PDF, for example, you can't just copy and paste the image so I often take a screenshot. What I'd like to do is replace the existing image with the image stored in the clipboard. (If I can just click on the image in the LO document and paste, then that would be easier but then I would assume that the only reason the "replace" command is in the pop-up menu is for images in files.

For the example above, the process flow using Word or Powerpoint is to take a screenshot of the table or image in PDF, switch to Word/Powerpoint, right-click on the existing image in Word/Powerpoint and select "Replace" from the menu and "from Clipboard" from the second menu.

When you move to LO, the user will try to do the same process but will get stuck because there is no "from Clipboard". This is where I've been stuck and frustrated numerous times.

I asked that the pop-up menu with the "Replace" command would have the ability to select "from Clipboard" or "from File". This would make the workflow similar and make it easier for adoption of LO in organizations that have been MS Office shops.

If all it takes to replace an existing image with what is in the clipboard, then this would solve the issue but it would need to be documented so people can find it. I've been using LO for ~9 years and have never found this mentioned. My frustration finally overflowed and I added this enhancement. :-)

Thanks.

You can Paste and Replace... per context menu. If we move the commands into a submenu Replace > From Clipboard and Replace > From File... you need one click more. I think we are a good prototype for the Microsoft UX fellows :-).

(Feel free to reopen if you disagree.)

It's the same as right-click, Paste when having a bitmap in the clipboard at least in my testing.
