If it doesn't solve the issue, please test updating LibreOffice 6.4 is an old version (End Of Life).

I'm on lubuntu 20.04 (focal) up to date

i have tried to install libreoffice 24 it does not work (bug 160388) it seems to have a dependancies problems (an icon theme which missing) so i can't try it on a newer version

since the file is corrupted it's impossible to recover it, it's the same on the windaube version on the laptop of my work, i'm unable to recover my work...

i send the file which does not work. i had search to recover the source code of the equations in it, but i had not find it (je suis ingénieur en mécanique, pas en informatique...) It would be very interesting for me to recover source code of equations when libreoffice crash, in order to recover my work. 

Please not that this file was converted from "docx" but i have also the problem whith native .odt files

The file doesn't have those empty OLE Objects.

Cleaning all empty OLE objects, and saving and reopening, the good formulas remain.

Tested with a new file, no issue found it.

As in the file properties, seems it was created on Word with Normal.dotm template.

Is this the file create with Word or was modified with LO?.

Can we have the file created with Word to test?

an other document with the same problem

This is an other document created by my wife under libreoffice on linux (ubuntu 20.04) but which could has been opened / writed and resend in odt format by another user using microsoft word (only a few number of users use libreoffice in her school) 

the same problem has appeared in april 2024 on this file. It has been done again from scratch on libreoffice without other problem

Note that i'm a very big user of libreoffice math (formulas) (thousand of page of documents and very big documents) and i have never had this sort of  bugs before 2024.

It seems that it appeared when a file was either generated first with microsoft word or have been modified with microsoft word even if it is a libreoffice file at it creation. 

The difficult is that it isn't always evident to know if a word user has modified a file

I think this is most likely bug 99225.
If you are able to provide steps that consistently reproduce the issue, it would be very helpful.
However, regarding the crash, do you get a crash report dialog? If you do, please submit and crash report and share the link to it here.

I have tried to replicate the bug yesterday in a simple file, but no crash and no equations problem, even with multiple "aller retour" between word and libreoffice. I would try to save a document just before and just after crash but difficult to make libreoffice crash

I make two or three documents per week using formulas, only four bug like this one (formulas disappears) since i have banned microsoft word in 2013-2014. Two of them in the two last month (the two document sended) 

I have tried for two hours to replicate the default it doesn't appears anymore. The action trigger ("élément déclencheur" en français) of the failure has not be identified for the moment. 

For crash report of libreoffice, i don't know where they are stocked in the system, and i have not take note of the number if sended to a server somewhere

It does sounds as elusive as bug 99225. Looking at the unzipped files, the objects are indeed gone. Attachment 194387 [details] has a lot of formula objects, which is consistent with bug 99225, but attachment 194401 [details] only had 13, which is surprising.
It's also interesting that you think it might happen when files have previously been edited in MS Office.

If you find a way to replicate consistently, please do let us know.

Maybe turning on the Backup feature is a good idea, if you are worried about it happening again in the future (in Tools > Options > Load/Save).

Usually, after a crash, a dialog pops up when restarting, allowing you to send a crash report. If you accept, it will give you a URL, which you can paste here or in a new bug report.

In any case, please update to a currently maintained version if you can, as the most recent version it was reported for is 7.3.

i have tried to update on my ubuntu install to libreoffice 24 but there's a problem of dependancies (with qt5), i will migrate to 24.04 after the end of the school year, when all quizzes are corrected. On my professional computer i'm not admin and cannot do anything

I'm sure that at least three of the four case of this bug was on files which have been either created by microsoft office or modified with it. for the two i have attach with the bug it's the case (the first one was send as a .docx by a colleague i have attach the source too, the second one was a correction of an exam at the school of my wife, a collaborative works, and all her colleague are usually works with microsoft. There are a lot of issues on microsoft equations too, maybe the translation of equations from microsoft are a part of the source of the problem

I'm now attentive to report correctly the crash if the bug occurs again
