Description MikeDerr 2024-07-01 17:46:12 UTC
Description:
I am opening LibreOffice and then opening a .ods spreadsheet that is 12k in size. At about the moment that the spreadsheet should appear, all windows close and LibreOffice closes completely. I disabled my AVG antivirus software. I can open LibreOffice, start a new ss, then select open and open my old document. If I click -save- at the top, again everything of LibreOffice immediately closes. I am running Windows 10 Pro with 8Gb ram. My spreadsheet has simple calculations in it. If I select About LibreOffice to get the exact version - again - closed.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. I double click a spreadsheet to launch and open -
2. LibreOffice bombs before document appears.
or
1. Launch LibreOffice, select file>open, click ss to open from desktop folder> bomb.

Actual Results:
the document never opens. Instead, all Libreoffice windows close and the system is returned to the desktop

Expected Results:
The document should open for work

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
When I open LibreOffice and select about.....two seconds later....again bombs. Everything closes. I will remove and reinstall to see if this gets better.

I would suggest try installing LO 7.6 instead. Does the crash happen with any version other than 24.2.4?

Is LO crashing when saving a different type of document/module, such as from Writer, instead of saving a spreadsheet from Calc?

You could also test installing a current Dev version. It would install in parallel to your stable version. Having a stable version and a development version installed is OK. Just beware not to run/execute more than one version at a time; close all LO windows before launching a different LO version.

Whichever the case, please report back any new info.

Sorry. I meant "saving" or "opening" or any other action from whichever module, including the Start Center.

I removed LO and installed the stable version....same issue. Then, deleted that, ran regedit to delete anything LO, then manually went to appdata and programfiles and deleted the LO folders and rebooted and reinstalled 24.2.2. I still have the problem HOWEVER, if I open a doc file first and let it sit in the background, I can open my spreadsheet and work on it and save it.

it is giving me more wtf feeling.

After my first post, I did the profile reset. Getting the same results, I just gave up and did the full gutting procedure that I just mentioned - in between.

Which exact version was that? Have you actually tried LO 7.6? Please go to menu Help > About and click on the icon to copy the info to the clipboard; then paste it in your next post.

I am also wondering why you are now testing with LO 24.2.2, and not the latest (24.2.4 ATM).

From your comment 3, I am guessing that the problem is seen on Calc only, and not with other modules such as Writer.

If, instead of opening a specific spreadsheet file, you try to start Calc with an empty clean spreadsheet, would that crash too?

Does the crash happen with a specific spreadsheet file? Or with a set of them? Or with any spreadsheet file?

Which type of spreadsheet files are we talking about? Are these ODS files? Are these XLSX files? Have you tried with others?

Please review your Calc settings. For example, LO menu Tools > Options > LibreOffice > OpenCL. What happens if you disable that and then close all LO windows and restart Calc anew? Does it cash as before?

-first- It seems fixed!
The LO stable that I tried was 7.6.7 just downloaded.
The reason why I tried a different version (24.2.2) is because that was in my downloads folder.
It did seem to only be with calc and I could open a blank sheet with no problem.
Lastly, I unchecked the opencl and restarted and now I can dbl-click from FileManager and launch, open, and go-to-work.

I'll test more tomorrow but, that looks like that might be it.

The problem started sometime during 24.2.2. I do see that I received a Radeon driver update on May 10th. I wonder if that was it?

I'll respond again tomorrow about this time...hoping all goes well. Thanks for the assist!!!

Do you also see the issue with a daily master build, which installs separately, Win-x86_64@tb77-TDF from https://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/current.html ?

It is also possible to pinpoint the issue using 24.2 bibisect repository: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Bibisect/Windows

Let me know, if you need guidance in bibisecting.

I downloaded LibreOfficeDev-25.2.0.0-64 and cannot run that at all. It launches to the white opening screen and immediately closes. I have just enough time to see File Tools at the top and then it is gone. I am right-clicking and selecting run-as-administrator.

I'm sorry but that makes little sense to me, leaving me only with new assumptions and more questions.

It is not clear whether you actually successfully installed that dev version or not.

It is not clear whether you launch that same dev version when you "see File Tools at the top and then it is gone". Is is also not clear whether you see that when launching the Start Center, or one of the modules (such as Calc).

It is not clear whether you executed the installer with administrator privileges, or was instead the program itself (after installation).

The dev version is installed in parallel, so clicking on the same icons that you already had in your system would not execute the new dev version.

Moreover, you can have more than one version installed, but you should avoid launching more than one version at the same time. If one LO version is running, you should close it before launching another one (or installing one).

There is no need to execute the dev installer nor the dev version as administrator. You should just execute it, and only accept admin access when you are ask for it.

Messing around with regedit should not be needed. Even when some personal (user) settings got corrupted, there is a simple way to deal with that, within the LO > Help > Start in Safe mode dialog.

As for the installer, do you install using the official msi installer? Just by double-click? Or by some command line? Or by some context menu (such as run as admin)?

As for the installed version(s), could you please go to LO > Help > About, and click on the icon within that dialog in order to copy the info to the clipboard? Then paste the result in your next post.

Also relevant is from where exactly you downloaded the dev version.

I'll just bounce around the questions
1/ I went to the website that you suggested - to download and try the dev version.
That was "https://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/current.html".
2/ In case it was corrupt, I just did it again and got version LibreOfficeDev_25.2.0.0.alpha0_Win_x86-64.msi.
3/ Before I installed the new dev, I ran the previous installer and selected to REMOVE the dev version of LO.
4/ Next, I disabled my AVG antivirus, returned to FireFox and selected downloads and selected the LibreOfficeDev file to launch from there. LO went through it's installation without showing any errors....AND I now have a second LO icon on my desktop. I am reading 24.2 on one and 25.2 on the other.
5/ I dbl-click and launch the 25.2 icon on my desktop that appeared during the installation (my 24.2 with OpenCL disabled is still working fine and closed at the moment).
I now get a white dialog box opening...at the top left I see LibreOfficeDev....and the box closes and I am done.....again. There was no editing of the registry. There is no question as to where I got what. There is the question of how the installer was initiated....by letting FireFox launch it.
On a side note, because during the previous days installation I was stopped and flagged that AVG had to check for viruses, I had run a separate repair of yesterdays installation by just dbl-clicking the downloaded .msi file in-case the AVG intervention caused something. The outcome never changed. That is also why with todays venture, I disabled virus protection before installation.

I have Windows 10 Pro 22h2 on a 27in Imac with I7-7700, 16gb ram, 130gb of free storage. Version 24.2 with OpenCL disabled still works.

I am _guessing_ that this time you downloaded the msi installer from TB77. I have no way to know from which day.

I was hoping we could finally get the Help > About info, at least from the version that is reported to work :(.

IIUC, the installation of the new dev version was successful, but you cannot launch LO. You could use the Windows' file manager in order to open the destination location of the LO Dev 25.2 shortcut icon; in the same directory (folder) you should also find "soffice_safe.exe".

Launching "soffice_safe.exe" (of the Dev version) should allow you to open the Start Center in LO's Safe Mode, and from there you could open Calc > menu Tools > Options, and change the OpenCL setting for the new version. Save the settings, close and try to launching the Dev version again (in normal mode this time). Please report back the results.

really? I stated that the version yesterday was LibreOfficeDev-25.2.0.0-64 and todays was -exact-file-name-downloaded- .... if you took a moment to see where you had directed me and what files were there you would know that Alphaone is today and not-Alphaone was yesterday.

from safe mode:
Version: 25.2.0.0.alpha0+ (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 2d591ae8ac55195762e155f93c39c046a4bcba82
CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 10 X86_64 (10.0 build 19045); UI render: default; VCL: win
Locale: en-US (en_US); UI: en-US
Calc: threaded

In safe-mode I was able to change the OpenCL setting - Configure>Disable Hardware Accelereation>select Save and Restart, - LO dev 25.2 aplhaone opens and stays open/stable.

My LO menu Tools > Options looks different (on MS Windows), so I am not sure what exactly you modified; (semi-rhetorical questions) OpenCL? LibreOfficeDev > View > Use Hardware acceleration? Some other (skia) setting?

Someone else might want to request your skia.log, and/or opencl_devices.log, or some details about your Graphics driver(s), or some backtrace, or...

In the meantime, to sum-up:

* LO 7.6 works
* LO 24.2 (and newer) with OpenCL Enabled fails
* LO 24.2 (and newer) with OpenCL Disabled works.
