Description marcusyoo 2024-07-09 13:23:16 UTC
I have a chart in calc that already had some data series in column chart and other data series in line chart. It seem to work okay. And the fact that I have them indicates that I was able to create mixed chart types or was able to edit the chart to change chart type for individual data series. (Or was imported from excel, which fully supports mixed chart types in a single chart.)
But now, I am unable to create a chart using different chart types for different data series in a single chart. I'm also unable to change chart type for a single data series. I.e., if I try to change chart type of one data series, all the data series in the chart gets changes to that chart type.
Clicking on a data series and selecting "format data series", I get options tab and other tabs that relates to the current chart type for the selected data series, but no option to change the type. If I select a data series and select "chart type...", I see the option to change chart type for all data series.
I see this as a critical flow, as there are many situations where you would like to see multiple data series with each data series represented in different chart type. And I'm submitting this as bug (rather than feature request) since I believe I was able to do mixed chart types before... don't know when that changed.

This is likely something that was originally created in MS Office.
We already have numerous tickets about supporting combo / complex charts coming from MSO, see:
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=142046&hide_resolved=1
Does yours fit one of those other reports? Which king of mixed chart exactly are you after?

I thought I have created the chart in libre, but I might be mistaken on that.
The particular chart I was working with was an investment charts that tracks a portfolio.
In a single chart, I had weekly balance in line chart type using primary axis, weekly %change in column chart using secondary axis. Wanted to add annual %change in the chart. Adding that data series, it was added (automatically) as a line chart type using primary axis. I was able to change the axis to secondary axis so that both weekly %change and annual 52-week %change would show on the same secondary axis. But I was not able to change the chart type for that 52-week %change data series to column chart.
Disregarding the opinions about whether which type data series is best displayed using line chart and which data type for column chart, etc., it just didn't make sense that you cannot mix and match different data series to different chart type in single chart.
I want (and I can only assume others might also want) to see sets of data series shown in a mix of column chart, line chart, ...
And whether the chart/spreadsheet was imported from xls or created anew in calc, this mixed chart type should be supported and one should be able to edit/modify chart types of existing chart as well as add new data series using chart type of your choice.

Thanks for clarifying.

Yes, it is possible to set up a bar and line chart in which two series have two different kinds of visualisation and are tied to a different Y axis:
- chart type Column and Line
- common Categories reference for the X axis
- Insert > Axes > Secondary Axes > Y axis
- In second series properties, Options > Align data series to > Secondary Y axis

See example in the attachment, created with LO 24.2.

But that is a bit involved, not very obvious that it is an option, and limited to bar + line, as you can see.

So, based on your description:

... I think you are describing the enhancement request in bug 97358.
Let's mark a duplicate of that one then.
