Description Andrew 2024-08-17 03:27:21 UTC
Calc Formatting: Problem Location: Text Wrap of angled text used in subheadings only. Libre Office Suite Ver: LibreOffice_24.2.5_Win_x86-64 and some previous versions.
When Text is wrapped for subheadings and placed at an angle, the text wrap is unstable, and flips between vertical and it's proper assignment as slanted, during any up/down scrolling. A video of this behavior explains it best here: https://youtu.be/dMYy7jH8TFU

The text wrap facilitation, seems generally buggy and ignores user requests to work at all, at random times. Sometimes transferring data to a new document clears the problem for a time.

Main headings, within the same document which are also formatted as slanted the same way, seem to be immune from this problem.

This problem seems isolated to slanted subheadings only.

I hope the video helps, provide an explanation and solution.
Thank you for your valuable skills and time.

Please attach a sample file, reduce the size as much as possible without private information, and paste the information in Menu/Help/About LibreOffice, there is a copy icon.

So this happens specifically in attachment 195939 [details], not as a general rule.

I originally had the problem in LibreOffice_7.6.7_Win_x86-64 and then moved to LibreOffice_24.2.5_Win_x86-64 specifically to see if the problem would resolve via the updated version, but the problem is persistent across those versions.

The problem can be seen since at least LO 7.1, although slightly differently. By LO 7.5, the rendering problem is already seen in the same way as in LO 24.2.

There is some glitch in the relevant cell borders in LO 7.1, but that glitch does not vary when scrolling up/down; it only happens at the first full scroll up/down (out of view).

Having said that, all the rendering issues are seen in the specific file, attachment 195939 [details], but not as a general rule:

* copy Row 20 to a different/new spreadsheet, and the result is as expected; or,

* in attachment 195939 [details], delete rows 11:19 and insert new rows in the same place; again the strange behavior will go away.

So, IDK what exactly created the problem, but apparently it is only present in this particular file.

Do you see the same problem in some other spreadsheet file?

I have now made a fresh Calc file, and re-run a series of tests in creating text wrap headings and subheadings using mostly standardized methodology, except where labeled as a different creation method such as using format painter. I now observe complete failure in row three to wrap text at the standard chosen angle of 55 degrees. The flipping of the text wrap now again appears, but this time in row 4 only. The other rows appear stable during scrolling. You can view this behavior here in a new video of the problem, in a freshky made Calc page.

This seems to indicate the problem is persistent, even using a new page from scratch, and across versions of Libre office Calc.

I will also provide the new Calc page seen in the video for perusal.
My computer version is Windows 11 Home Version 23H2 if it has any relevance.

My intuition tells me that solving this may help stabilize Libre office Calc in a general way, and that this problem may be behind some other bug reports.

Thanks to all helping, regards this very interesting problem, it is very much appreciated...

Calc Doc used in video 2: Libre Office Flipping Text Wrap During Scrolling video 2.

This is a fresh document and series of tests in which the problem is shown to be persistent. A fresh video of the problem is also available to peruse, made from the same Calc page being uploaded here.

Much thanks to all helping. I am working in Steganographic decoding, and are building a large database that will be publicly available as a free resource, if we can solve this problem.
