Description David García 2024-09-08 21:23:14 UTC
Description:
As LibreOffice doesn't recognize automatically the language of a paragraph, you need to select it and then right click on the status bar to set it manually.

In my particular case, when I installed LibreOffice, I selected three languages (Spanish [Spain], English [UK] and English [USA]), so you would expect that LibreOffice would suggest these three languages for the paragraph. However, this is often not the case:

1. There are times when only one or two of these three languages are directly offered.
2. I've just experienced a case where I created a new Writer document, I pasted some English text from the web and LibreOffice suggested me Hawaiian as an option. It's not the first time that I get a random suggestion.

If the language of the paragraph isn't directly offered, you need to click on "Set Language for paragraph", which takes you to a drop-down list that looks almost the same as the previous drop-down list. Very often, you don't get what you need here either and you need to click again, this time on "More", in order to go to the "Character" section. Once there, you need to click on another drop-down list and go through a huge number of languages. The whole process is really time-consuming.

In general, I think that the whole experience of using the spell checker and, in particular, the way a language is suggested and applied to a paragraph, could be improved. I wonder if there are plans to revamp the spell checker: looking at what Thunderbird does with the spell checking could be a source of inspiration.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. You select a paragraph.
2. You right click on the status bar to set the language of the spell checker.

Actual Results:
Random languages are sometimes offered.

Expected Results:
LibreOffice should directly suggest the languages you've previously installed.

Reproducible: Always
