Description dave.engineer@gmail.com 2024-09-11 11:55:01 UTC
Description:
In Excel, if you have a chart next to a data table, and add new data to cells at the bottom of the table, you can click on the chart and the cells plotted are be selected. You can then grab a corner at the bottom of the selected cells and drag the selection box down and the chart would update with the new data. Doesn't work in in calc and would be good feature to have.

I would pretty much like that as well.

In Calc you need to:
1) Double click the chart
2) Right-click it
3) Select Data Ranges
4) Then click the Ref selection button
5) Select the entire range again (since there's no handle to simply drag to update it)

IMO we do not offer a good experience in this regard.

There is a shorter way: select the entire range of your data, including the new data, and drag it onto the chart. You do not need to put the diagram into edit mode beforehand.

Nevertheless, it is useful Excel feature, that it shows the effected cells, when you click the chart and you can change the range by dragging handles.

We separate clearly between (chart) OLE objects and the Calc spreadsheet. And these range interaction while in edit mode/being selected are probably not going to fly. => needsDevAdvice

OTOH, Excel cannot drag'n drop values into the chart. Perhaps we just need to advertise this feature better. By the way, just DnD overwrite the data range but with the alt modifier pressed it adds the selection.

Sounds good from UX POV but is likely not feasible.
