Description peter josvai 2024-09-24 17:07:36 UTC
Description:
hi,

FILE / TEMPLATES / MANAGE TEMPLATES

a window opens.

In this window (Templates) you can see "tool tips" as you move the mouse over the template icon. In the tool tip "bubble" you see:

template name
category

It would be useful if in a 3rd row we could see the template filename, too.

WHY?
Because sometimes 'template name' and the 'template filename' are NOT the same.
For transparency's sake, it would be great to have a 3rd row (in the Bubble),
with "template filename":

In a new machine, fresh install, 'template names' and 'template filenames' are the same.
But time goes by, the user renames a template, imports another one,
and 'template names' and 'template filenames' are not the same anymore.

this is why :)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. File / Templates
2. move the mouse over the template icons
3. look at the tool tip bubble

Actual Results:
you see:

template name
category

Expected Results:
it would be great to see:

template name
category
template filename

Reproducible: Always

Peter, thank you for that idea. Let's treat it as enhancement request and ask design-team for decision. Personally I don't have an objection.

The dialog also offers a List view mode, so if filename/path is not on the tooltip it could be added to the List view?

Also, kind of feels like the dialog should be resizable.

While in list view mode the tooltip does show the path. Sufficient to me for "are not the same anymore". I actually see no use case that requires to know whether a template is in path A or B, that users have created manually. => WF

Yes, verified full system file path to the template *does* show on the tooltip when in "List" view on 24.8.2.1 and master against 25.2.0 (Win10)

Agree with a => WF, rather than visual noise of a third row for the "Thumbnail" view tooltips.

I:

* Would not like a long path as a third tooltip line in Icons mode.
* Do NOT feel the tooltip in list mode is sufficient, for two reasons:
(1.) How would the user know that information is available in one display mode and unavailable in the other?
(2.) Why should the user think about a tooltip? In list mode, there are data colums - why isn't the path one of them?
(3.) Can't copy the text, nor compare items, using tooltips

So at the very least I support adding the path as a list view column; and I would also like to see some kind of increased visibility in icons view, although I don't have a concrete suggestion for doing that.

We discussed the topic in the design meeting.

So far no clear use case has been presented why the file path is essential. The recommended way to organize templates is per categories. The requested third line is clearly not a good approach and the only alternative to what we have is adding another column to the list view. But we suggest to keep the UI clean.
