Description gowildler 2024-10-05 10:50:21 UTC
Description:
Sometimes, when I type text into a LibreOffice Calc cell, the last letter I typed automatically gets selected, causing every subsequent letter to overwrite the previous one. The glitch only seems to occur with cells that already contain text. You have to click once more in the table cell to temporarily fix it.

This bug is REALLY ANNOYING! It tends to occur more frequently after launching the application! (But it didn’t happen at all on the very first launch …)

Steps to Reproduce:
I won’t write these as the STUPID BUGZILLA SOFTWARE DELETED ALL THESE TEXT FIELD CONTENTS FOR MEEEEE!!!!!!!!

In this screen capture video, the bug occurs between timestamps 0:26 and 1:27.

Do you see this in any other applications? i.e. surprising selections/deselections?

I cannot reproduce the bug in LibreOffice Writer, not even in tables there, as Writer’s text selection works differently in general to Calc’s.

And, of course, the bug is foreign to anything non-LibreOffice.

There could be a touchpad related to this issue?
Are you editing a cell near the right side of the Calc window?
Seem obvious, but can you confirm that the cell alignment property is set to "fit text" (automatic new lines)?
The status bar shows that overwrite mode is active after the issue begins?
What is the cell horizontal text alignment value (Default, Left, Justified)?
Why "fix the issue!" isn't in the same line following "temporarily" since there is enough space (timestamp 1:44)? This changes when zoom level is changed?
Thanks for sharing the video.

> There could be a touchpad related to this issue?
Nothing to do with the bug, as I use the Apple Magic Mouse and Keyboard with my iMac.

> Are you editing a cell near the right side of the Calc window?
Yes; though the issue can also occur farther left.

Interestingly, scrolling a column to the left/right (but NOT up/down) during the bug momentarily fixes it, but when you scroll back, it occurs at the same spot again.

> "fit text" (automatic new lines)?
Wrap Text is disabled, but this setting doesn’t influence the bug.

> The status bar shows that overwrite mode is active after the issue begins?
No.

> What is the cell horizontal text alignment value (Default, Left, Justified)?
Default, but the issue occurs independently of the text alignment. (The effects are worst for centered text, as the glitch deletes text down to a single letter in that case, if you keep typing!)

> Why "fix the issue!" isn't in the same line following "temporarily" since

I inserted a manual line break there with cmd+Return.

You’re welcome. Oh, and sorry for the rage (I tried my best to contain myself – spamming emojis instead of cursing) – at the moment, my mood is way more stable!

This bug is actually the same as bug 162413, so further discussion should happen there.
