hi, This could be a simple enhancement. Just adding one more option to a dialogue, which would involve no further actions / operations. So, when you restart Libreoffice after a crash, you have a dialogue window asking you to tick the checkbox at the documents in the list which you want to be recovered (from the backup copies that Libreoffice had saved in the background before the crash). Now, the optins presented to the user are: recover do not recover (this is what the checkboxes offer) and when you have selected none to be recovered, you can press the "discard all" button to get to opening the application. But this also means that they will not be opened. You have 6 documents in the list, and you selected not one of them to be recovered, after pressing "discard all" it would be great if those documents would still open. So, in steps: A. you have 6 documents open B. Libreoffice crashes C. you start it, D. the dialogue comes up, offering you to check (tick) which documents you want to be recovered, Those that you don't check (tick), won't be opened. What would be great instead: If every document could be reopened after a crash. If you could discard recovery but still get your documents opened. ............. notes: reopening a document is not a big work, sure :) but if you have to check the version of a document, mistakes can happen... plus, it is extra work :) It could be so much simpler: Your Libreoffice application has crashed? No problem! We can restart it! You can get your documents recovered! IF YOU WANT. But you can choose not to recover them, but open them as they are. :::: AND the reason why you (sometimes) don't want recovery: :::: Because you know that you have saved the changes, and you don't want any surprise whatsoever. If your documents were saved, why repair them? It is safer to just reopen them. AND, of course, sometimes you want recovery!! Cause it is a brilliant thing!! And sometimes you want only one document to be recovered, cause that's the one you were editing when Libreoffice crashed. The point is to reopen all the documents even without recovery :) - - - thank you for developing Libreoffice and Writer!! - - -
The recovery dialog was improved for bug 114508. What do you think is missing beyond the use cases discussed there?
Open all, even not recovered, must still be optional. Because e.g. sometimes a bug results in a specific file crashing the program on open; then if it's in your crash list, and will try to open each time, you will get a crash loop. Which leads to another set of controls ... and the UI becomes cluttered, for a use case which, likely, will be only rarely useful (I may be wrong in the assessment). My take: WONTFIX (at least until there is a significant demand).
Peter usually does not reply to follow-up questions and since I'm also for WF'ing the request we should not wait and resolve the ticket.
