Description Scott 2024-11-07 12:15:01 UTC
Description:
On Macintosh, in Calc the key combination Option-Arrow (⌥→) changes column width instead of jumping to the next word of text. This is contrary to the functionality that is standard for programs on Macintosh. (Notably, Writer does follow the normal functionality: Option-Arrow (⌥→) there actually does jump the cursor to the next word.) This is very problematic, because whenever I forget to restrain myself from using the normal key combination, the column width is changed, and in about half of all cases the Undo command will not work on a column width change, so the only fix then is to close the file without saving.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a cell, then click on text in it.
2. Press Option-Arrow (⌥→).

Actual Results:
The column becomes wider.

Expected Results:
The cursor should jump to the next word, or to the next unit of text in a formula.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
The key combination Command-Arrow (⌘→) jumps the cursor to the next unit of text. But the correct/standard functionality for Command-Arrow is supposed to be to jump to the end of the line of text (and this is also implemented correctly in Writer).

I have replicated this on my system. I believe this is a design choice for Calc.

Oh, that's really bad news. This causes major problems for me. It's not necessary to repurpose this standard Macintosh shortcut in order to change column width, because there are already other ways to do that. This is contrary to how other programs work on a Mac, and it's such a hassle to deal with, again and again. It damages my spreadsheets, so the only recourse usually is to close without saving.
