Spellcheck is too difficult to operate with keyboard With the old primitive spellcheck way back, one tab would take you to being able to type in the correction, and this meant that the word to be corrected was selected. So all you had to do was type the correction. Now you have to select the word in red, or do a delete char to get rid of the error. Like ms office it is set up best for mouse users. Us keyboarders would like it to be easier! Also, the tab count is not reliable. Depending on which buttons were recently in use, the number of times one has to hit tab to get to the correct field changes.
I would very much like to have the option of the old style spellcheck. I imagine the same is true for any users that touch type, and especially those who have RSI from mouse use. Only really a bug in that the old style spellcheck that worked perfectly was removed! Surely, the code still works fine. The addition of one extra field in the settings to access the capability would not be too much work given the benefits. (I would be happy to do the work here. C/UNIX/XWindow experience. But I would need a bit of hand holding to get into the code base. Tried and found could not follow the process to success. Plus not sure how to sign up!)
I'm sorry, but I don't really understand the steps. Maybe the old spellcheck is so way, way back that I don't have it. I tried with LibreOffice 3.5.0 and there in the Spelling dialog, pressing Tab after an unknown word has been found moves the focus from the "Change" button to the "Change All" button. Tabbing onward, I am only taken to the text input box so the cursor is at the beginning. The unknown word is not selected. The current behaviour actually seems more in line with what you are requesting: instead of the "Change" button, the focus is now at the beginning of the unknown word in the input box. This means I can use Ctrl+Delete to remove the word and type the replacement.
Thank you for your time. To see the old style you can just look at the Thunderbird spellcheck. Very simple, and very fast and easy to use. IMO this was a significant loss. For whatever reason, the tabbing does not work in my system in the modern app, and presumably not for others. Obviously, however, it is close to the Windows app and so exactly the right thing for many users. And for using it with the mouse it works fine. But for those of us with RSI (not to mention a bit of a problem with attention deficit or whatever!) it is a royal pain. My suggestion was made in the light of the assumption that he old code is still in the archives. So a simple switch in the settings or in the menus would mean the oldies could spellcheck in peace! As it is I have to copy paste into Thunderbird to get the functionality.

For > whatever reason, the tabbing does not work in my system in the modern app, > and presumably not for others. Then you should not have talked about old style, but referred to Thunderbird's style. I don't get what you mean - there is no tabbing required as I said in my previous comment.
Just to be clear, here are the steps: 1. Be in Writer, have text with an unknown word. 2. Press F7 to open the Spelling dialog 3. The cursor is at the beginning of the unknown word. 4. Press Ctrl+Delete to remove the unknown word and write what you like. One corner case there is, if the unknown word ends with a period. For some reason, in this case the cursor is positioned after the period. Still, the focus is in the input box and we only have to press Left arrow and Ctrl+Backspace to remove the word.
Initiate spellcheck. Word you like to use is in red. Enter puts it in the text. Word you like to use is not in red, or in the suggestions. To get to the text takes 8 tab tab tab tab tab tab tab tab. Enter puts it in the text. But next time, it may not be 8. It varies. Depending on which buttons you have used lately. I think. It seems random. If you have just done alt i to ignore once, it is now just 3 tabs to get to the text. So there is no way to train the reflexes to do this quickly and automatically. This is the beauty of the old system. Utterly straightforward. Can be managed at speed by anyone. ... Be in Writer, have text with an unknown word. 2. Press F7 to open the Spelling dialog 3. The cursor is at the beginning of the unknown word. 4. Press Ctrl+Delete to remove the unknown word and write what you like. CHANGE MIND alt i to ignore once and go to next instance with enter but now you are still in the text field so that give a new line where you don't want it. this issue is simple - the interface is COMPLEX and that is just the job for mouse use. Perfect. A good copy of the ms system - maybe it came from elsewhere, i do not know. but for simplicity and speed the old system was massively preferable. For someone typing thousands of words at a go, what you want is that simplicity. the last one i remember it in was ooo 1.1.1 i think, though it might have persisted to 1.1.3
Created attachment 203319 [details] Screenshot of initiated spelling dialog (In reply to Andrew from comment #6) > Initiate spellcheck. > > > Word you like to use is in red. Enter puts it in the text. No, Enter does not put it in the text. See attached screenshot. Enter at this point would insert a line break within the text input box. I wonder how you are seeing the behaviour you describe.
ok Among other difficulties: The cursor is in a different place at different times. New invocation of spellcheck Enter gives first suggested word Next invocaton Enter gives new line in front of highlihted word in text box. As i said. it is a complex interface. I feel it would be a superb benefit to a great many people to have the simpler interface as an option. Espeically as the code is all sitting waiting. If someone would like to hold my hand a bit getting it the files i will do the fix myself. I find the complexity of the system overwhelming. A problem I found with each new coding environment. Though i belive this is not unsual.
Here are all "enhancement requests" with spell in the summary: https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/buglist.cgi?bug_severity=enhancement&resolution=---&short_desc=spell&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr I can't find anything exactly like your request.
(In reply to Andrew from comment #8) > As i said. it is a complex interface. Too many functions spoil the UI broth. Bug 132505 contains a mockup that might solve your problems. Bug 96000 very likely handles the other topics (which I put second after the request to change the UI).
