Description Andy 2025-01-07 08:06:01 UTC
Description:
The table editor in Writer has always had the "Contorni tabella" (I am not sure how this is translated in English) command, which allowed to display a grey frame outlining the cells even if you did not set visible borders for the table. In 25.2 this option is not shown anymore in the table toolbar, and if you look for it in the full list of available icons, you cannot find it.
Editing tables that you do not want to have visible borders without this option is very inconvenient.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.create a new writer doc and insert a table into it
2.set the table to be without visible borders
3.Now the table is fully invisible, and you do not have the option to show the table frame that was available until now since the icon to do this in the table toolbar is not there anymore, and it is not available if you want to personalize the toolbar

Actual Results:
it is impossible to see the table frame when it does not have a visible border, making it difficult to spot and edit tables

Expected Results:
As in all previous versions, the table frame should be displayed - if the option is active - with grey subtle borders

Reproducible: Always

This is after changes per bug 163856. You now control this via Tools - Options - Writer - Formatting Aids: Object Boundaries.

Thanks for the info.
However, I checked the setting you mention, and it is activated on my PC:
"settings > writer formatting > Object boundaries > tables" is active, but I still cannot see the table frame (or boundaries if this is the chosen term). Please have a look at the attached image "Table boundaries invisible in 25-2", where you can see a 6x9 table where I have put borders on the first columns and last row to prove a table is actually there. As you can see, the other cells (those belonging to the first 5 rows and last 7 columns) have no visible boundaries, even if the indicated setting is active.
In contrast, check the same file opened in 24.2 in the second image attached.

This said, enabling /disabling the boundaries visibility quickly and with just one click is IMHO a valuable functionality, because very often you edit the table with the boundaries on, then rapidly hide them to check the final output, then activate them again to prefect the editing, and repeat this switch many times to reach the desired format for the table. Having this hidden deeply inside the program settings is nowhere as efficient/ergonomic.
Sorry for bothering,

And is View - Boundaries active for you? Please don't change the status for no reason.

Ok now I got it - I did not know that this setting was related to this menu command (new as well, you did not mention it previously I think).
So I created a new icon item with this command, put it into the table toolbar where the old default button was before, and got the same (almost) functionality. Almost since this way it seems not to be possible to hide/show table boundaries independently from other boundaries unless you go into settings to change it. But this is a very minor issue.
As this is a modification to the app that will probably go unnoticed by many, and many users wouldn't bother/be used to personalize the toolbar themselves, perhaps the new icon I inserted to replace the old, ever present one, could be inserted by default in the install process.

As a final note, both the new settings option and the menu command are in English in the Italian version, but this I assume is due to be corrected in later releases.

Sorry for touching the status!

Do you like the new separation, which solves bug 163856?

Thank you for the question, but I am not fully able to reply; As written in previous comments, I use tables a lot so the efficiency in their formatting is foremost to me; I never cared very much for other boundaries, as I use sections very rarely, and images etc. are not that complicated to place in the text so that I never really needed boundaries for them.
I would say that, once the change features became clear to me, they make sense; the only thing, as I mentioned, is that I would maintain the icon to display/hide boundaries in the tables toolbar, so that - having the table boundaries active as default in the settings - users accustomed to use that icon to work with tables would not panic as I did when I discovered its disappearance and had no info on the complete modification logic.
