Description Jeff Fortin Tam 2025-02-06 06:00:29 UTC
In many of my spreadsheets, I have:
- cells/columns that have simple formulas that fit on one line;
- cells/columns with complex formulas broken into multiple lines for readability.

I often navigate with the formula bar in compact mode rather than always-expanded, because I need all the space I can get to show the actual data.

However, when you encounter a cell that has a complex multiple-lines formula, it is not visually obvious that this is the case.

One way I think this situation could be improved would be for the formula bar's "▼" expander button (at the right edge of the formula bar) to be colored with a different background or foreground accent color when there are cutoff multiline contents that are not shown.

For example, if that button were to be red/orange, I would easily notice it as an indicator that there I need to use it to see the full formula.

Another option, always used *in documents* (but admittedly not in controls) is a red triangle "not all content is shown / fits the space".

The cell contain =1 \n + 2

It's probably an easyhack to change the expander color. But having the information closer to the eye focus would be better. Like =1 ▶(U+25B6)
