Description Eyal Rozenberg 2025-02-06 21:24:09 UTC
Despite having used LibreOffice for many years, I have not, until just today, realized one can choose to show text labels for toolbar buttons.

You see, the location of the radio group which lets the user configure this is extremely uninituitive, hidden away in a weirdly-placed hamburger menu in the Customize dialog, Toolbars pane. I'll add screenshots to illustrate.

Problems:

* On right-clicking the toolbars, nothing guides you to this selection.
* On right-clicking the toolbars, nothing suggests such a choice may be possible.
* Choosing the command display style is not quite a customization of the toolbar, and arguably doesn't belong in that dialog
* The choice is located within a (sub)menu, not in the dialog pane itself
* The submenu is positioned in an area entitled "Target", although it doesn't have much to do with any "Target"
* The submenu is a hamburger menu. That does not tell us what to expect for its contents, plus, hamburger menus in the middle of a dialog and among other controls is kind of weird.

Suggestions:

* Put this choice in a submenu of the View > Toolbars menu.
* Put this choice in a submenu on the context menu for toolbars.
* Put this choice directly within the Customize dialog, Toolbars pane - if it is kept there at all, which may not be such a good idea

Current state of the Text labeling is not that good, so can continue to justify that it being hidden away in the Target stanza Hamburger on the the Customize -> Toolbar panel is reasonable.

Only with work as for bug 101877 to refactor the appearance of Toolbar button control (size of icons) and placement/alignment of the Text would it make much of a difference for users, and at that point need more prominent placement of the customization control.

I'd just add this facet to the work needed on bug 101877 as it is about both appearance of the UI and toggling those modes--Icons only, Text only, and Icons & Text.

Customization dialog, Toolbar pane (radio group visible)

... result of clicking the hamburger menu under the "Target" header and on the right.

(In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #1)

I'd say that's a bit of an upside-down argument. Is it not better for people, who enjoy/benefit from button labels, to easily locate it, and have something usable already - rather than for them to just believe it doesn't exist and remain silent about implementation deficiencies? If they complain I'd say that's a good thing, not a bad thing.

Complaint is, after all, the second most sincere form of flattery, is it not? :-)

The setting is per toolbar and by that at the correct position. It makes not much sense to break the UI with text as most of commands would be hidden behind the chevron anyway. So -1 to change the current UI.

If the request was to make it possible per item, ie. show the text for just one command, it is a different situation. In this case I believe we have technical restrictions.

We discussed the topic in the design meeting.

The proposal to add the choice to the context menu of each toolbar sounds reasonable.

Hossein, easyhack?
