Description Uncombed5936 2025-02-07 16:50:37 UTC
Description:
I make the 'Toggle between dark and light modes' button visible on the standard toolbar. My default mode is dark. I click on the button and the mode changes to light as expected. I click on it again and nothing happens. The button remains depressed.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. I make the 'Toggle between dark and light modes' button visible on the standard toolbar.
2. My default mode is dark (automatic theme, Appearance: System). I click on the button and the mode changes to light as expected.
3. I click on it again and nothing happens. The button always looks depressed.
4. Closing and Reopening the document restores the dark mode

Actual Results:
The button works in changing the mode from dark to light, but not back to dark.

Expected Results:
I would expect the button to toggle between the two modes without limitations.

Reproducible: Always

EDIT: I said 'Closing and Reopening the document restores the dark mode'. In fact, it restores the document colours correctly but the menu bar text appears as black text on dark background. To fully restore dark mode in environment and document I have to restart Writer.

This is known, simply install an Appearance theme (Tools -> Options -> Appearance, the puzzle piece icon) and use that rather than the default Automatic.

The "Light Application Colors" System - Light - Dark radio buttons should get you functional, but try the other themes offered.

Otherwise manipulating the "Automatic" appearance theme and triggering a restart has been corrected for the 25.8 release to make it functional.

Thanks but that's not what I see here, and I am afraid the themes setup is completely broken now. There is no 'Light Application Colors' option. I installed the Dark Gray theme and got a dark environment but light documents. To fix that I re-started Writer, switched back to Automatic and tried different System/Light/Dark Appearance combinations. I ended up with all my documents appearing as black text on very dark background, and I couldn't go back to white on dark. Reset under Appearance didn't change anything either.

I eventually got my text colours back by selecting Theme: Dark Grey, Appearance: System, Customizations - Items - Document Background - Color: Automatic. I am still trying to figure out how to change the table grid to proper automatic (currently Table boundaries: Automatic makes it appear as black lines on dark background).

Going back to the original report, clicking on the toggle button switches display to complete black on black until I restart Writer. This is apparently because the button changes the theme to Automatic. On restart I get black on grey. To restore my dark theme colours I have to change the theme from Automatic to Dark Gray. I don't think I will click on that button again.

For some reason the dark mode never worked properly here and it got worse in 25.2.0.3. My sense is it is a second class citizen compared to the light mode. Eg do documents and dialogues in dark mode LO have to start with a blinding white flash before they go dark? At night with a dark themed desktop it is incredibly annoying, possibly even harmful to some users.
