Description Soundkilla 2025-02-11 16:34:53 UTC
Description:
The problem appeared after switching from the 7.5 version to the new 25.2.

Please see here my theme settings: https://imgur.com/a/KQKfYVr (I would like to keep using this theme)

Here you can see my appearance settings: https://imgur.com/a/OCNSQFt (I would like to keep the appearance option as light)

What I don’t understand is that the background or margin of my writer documents is now black, it never was before and don’t know why it changed to black and why it does not revert to the default colour after factory resetting libre office.

Here you can see how it looks: https://imgur.com/a/MeZMfMl

This is the colour I am used to have as a background (I marked it with a red X, although this is a picture from the internet and not a screenshot from my computer): Imgur: https://imgur.com/a/LhHR8aB

I already tried to change some settings in page style but I have only been able to change the colour of the document itself, but not the background.

I also tried this:
Create a new theme in Preferences > LibreOffice > Appearance by clicking the New button and giving it a name.
Under Customisations, select Application background

If Light is selected, choose Automatic colour in the palette
Click OK and allow LibreOffice to restart

I was then advised to report a bug here in case the background would still be black which it was, as you can see here: https://imgur.com/a/HjMpPCm

If you need more info please contact me.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Preferences
2.Appearance
3.Automatic - option Light
4. apply (does not work)

and

1.Preferences
2.Appearance
3.New - name theme - click ok
4.Dropdown menu use newly created theme
5.Options - appearance - select Light
6. Items - dropdown menu select application background
7. Colour - Light - dropdown menu select automatic and click ok

Actual Results:
https://imgur.com/a/HjMpPCm

Expected Results:
Background or margin colour in Writer and / or Impress should be the default one, kind of greyish.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

At 25.2.0 the os/DE populated 'Automatic' appearance theme can not be edited (but that has been added for 25.8 release). So until then to restore to os/DE defaults you must clear your LibreOffice profile, by rename or deletion and allow it to rebuild.

From 25.2 onward the old default Application Colors applied to the document background and the application background have been removed. The values now follow os/DE provided color 'System' theme, and may appear 'Dark' or 'Light' under the automatic values taken from os/DE.

The new *Appearance themes* (excluding the os/DE default 'Automatic') do respond to the 'System' colors setting elements to Automatic as os/DE provides, but will define element colors in the theme for both Dark or Light modes--some themes will be more completely defined and each theme can differ on the completness of its Light or its Dark mode color assignments.

So, because the Automatic appearance them can not be edited at the 25.2 release, to customize to your Appearance preferences you *must install* one of the Tools -> Options -> Appearance *theme extensions*, e.g. 'Light Application Colors', 'Lime Theme', or the 'Dark Gray Theme' might be to your liking.

Then you will be able to customize any of the UI element values to your liking. Changes in the customizations will save back onto that theme, or you can use those theme as a template to create as a completely new theme. You have to delete profile and reinstall a modified Appearance theme to get back to its defaults.

Since you say you want Grey application background, perhaps give the 'Dark Gray Theme' a test. Or for more color the 'Office 2003 Blue' they are both pretty complete. Just remember that at 25.2 or later, to get back to actual defaults of os/DE you must clear your user profile.

That will improve at 25.8, while more themes and tools to generate them are in the works.

I will be waiting for the next release in this case.

I just find unusual that when I set my appearance in Macos as light, then go in Libre office, change the appearance to system in the preferences, the colour is set correctly.

However when I set the appearance in Macos back to dark, then go back to Libre office and set the appearance to light, my background is black again.

But yes if you tell me that this issue will be resolved with the next update, I will wait.

Thank you for your assistance!!! :)

Hey I changed the status to reopened as I am not sure if otherwise someone would see my comment N°2.

This is something I found out after having read the comment N°1 from vsfoote.

Hi Soundkilla, I implemented themes and back then (even now) I didn't have a mac at hand. During the project, I used some MacOs VMs which clearly left a lot of rough corners. I plan to get one soon, so expect the situation to improve.
