Description: Just found "äußerlich" automatically hyphenated between e an r. Please add "äu1ßer1lich" to hyph_de_DE.dic. Steps to Reproduce: read /usr/share/hyphen/hyph_de_DE.dic (myspell-de_DE version up to 20240321 tested) Actual Results: word not within Expected Results: within Reproducible: Always User Profile Reset: No Additional Info: This is a Linguistic bug but it DOES affect a particular language only. Unfortunately this Bugzilla doesn't provide a link to file this bug elsewhere. In earlier days this word could be hyphenated as äus-zerlich, later äus-serlich, now äu-ßerlich but never ever äuße-rlich! The only other possibility would be äußer-lich (when applicable). What can be done to provide word formation based hyphenation in future? What can be done to allow selection of old hyphenation rules for quotations of old texts?
@Dennis, I thought you might be interested in this issue
Created attachment 199698 [details] Working example I tried some stuff but it was always suggested to do either äu>>ßerlich or äußer>>lich. Attached my two examples using Version: 25.2.1.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community Build ID: d3abf4aee5fd705e4a92bba33a32f40bc4e56f49 CPU threads: 4; OS: macOS 15.2; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: osx Locale: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); UI: de-DE Calc: threaded Can you attach a) a test document and b) the about --> info dialog information?
@Karl I believe you are the person in charge. :-)
Created attachment 199699 [details] updated version showing all possible hyphenations updated version of the text should show all possible automatic hyphenations in dependency of available FreeSerif font and entry in /usr/share/hyphen/hyph_de_DE.dic If entry has been made, hyphenation works correctly in two variants.
Ah... do you know where I can download the font? It is not on my system.
So you are working with Windows, are you? Original source is http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/freefont/ But this font is part of popular Linux distributions and installed by default. You remember, it's a Linux LibreOffice localization issue, do you?
btw. You might as well use an other font and adjust the diagonal line or delete a short word out of the sentence to have the "äußerlich" in an appropriate position relative to the line end and hence meet the width of the other font letters.

You remember, it's a Linux LibreOffice localization issue, do you? ha, no, missed that. Tomorrow I will test on my linux machine.
Repro using Version: 24.8.5.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 27b361b745d0ea8f99bc93dfcb7a39098dfa5fff CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 6.11; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3 Locale: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); UI: de-DE Calc: threaded and after installing the font: Ubuntu doesn't include this font any longer, even not as a repository. :-)
Astonished: there is a current distribution that doesn't offer FreeSerif font? It's among those available in Wikimedia Commons for SVG rendering one of very few providing a large unicode character set even for ancient languages. Do you need assistance in adapting the working example to a different popular font?
