Description Banobe Pascal 2025-03-17 19:39:56 UTC
Description:
Spotlight is the term that is been used in LibreOffice Style List to signify highlight styles but it doesn't help and it is quite vague for the user to understand its purpose.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open Libreoffice Writer
2.Click on the Styles icon on the left Sidebar
3.Notice the title in settings is "Spotlight"

Actual Results:
While using the Styles List the setting "Spotlight" doesn't clearly communicate to the user about its purpose which makes it unusable

Expected Results:
Using the Style List setting "Spotlight" should clearly indicate its purpose and usability to the user. Since styles are highlighted when used correctly, a more appropriate label would be "Highlight Styles."

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
This improves clarity and aligns better with user expectations.

Translated in Help and Documentation [1][2][3][4], up to l10n to handle. Otherwise 'Spotlight' has already been implemented and deployed for the 7.6, 24.2, 24.8, and 25.2 release builds. No real advantage to changing it now.

Several suggestions during implementation:

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38194#c66

a simple "Show styling" label adjacent to the "Show previews" would identify what the checkbox will do.

But then so does "Spotlight" as intransitive or figurative verb--exactly Apples usage for naming their search engine.

Again no real reason to re-label at this point.

Using a moniker for a certain feature is not vague. Once you understand what spotlight does it is an easy to understand and catchy term. Besides, have you considered direct formatting as part of the spotlight feature?

-1 to change it.
